birth control options

does anyone have any recommendations for bc that i do not have to take every day? my fiance and i will be getting married soon and i want to make sure we dont get pregnant right away... we have sex often now but use a condom for protection

Re: birth control options

  • A condom with spermicide is pretty effective as long as the condom isn't damaged.  Adam & Eve sells condoms in bulk.  MW and I have used condoms in the past when she went off of birth control to prevent pregnancy.
  • I'm not a fan of birth control because of it's horrid side effects, but there are patches you can get now. There's also an implant that's supposed to give up to 3 years of protection.

There are also IUDs but I'm iffy on those after seeing all those law ads saying "if you've use mirena and such and such disease/infection please call us now"

There are female condoms, songes, and diaphragms, caps now, but those you have to insert.

I would recommend NFP (natural family planning) also known as Fertility Awareness or Sympto Thermal Method. You'll have to chart for at least 6 months (recommended) in order to get an accurate reading of when you ovulate. Basically you take your temperature every morning and when it spikes, it means you ovulated.

  • Diaphragms also, but again, you have to insert beforehand --- if you're not comfortable with touching your genitalia, then it's not the bc for you.

Sponges insert also; drugstore dot com and other on line drugstores carry them, also.

Vaginal film, suppositories, foam and film, also.
  • I also use FAM/NFP.  I would make sure you are using condoms for at least 6 months until you can know your body and your chart.  If you go this method, I would read Taking Charge of your Fertility.  I would also use Fertilityfriend.com.  The link is in my siggie, or just go to the website and sign up.
  • IUD, the shot, or patches.

  • I use a Copper IUD and LOVE IT! Dont have to worry about it for +5 years and no hormons, it is a bit painful to get put in but so worth it.
  • I am on my second Mirena IUD (they last 5 years). I LOVE IT!! It does have hormones, but a very small amount of them, which has helped me have fewer and lighter periods. The efficacy rate is incredibly high with any IUD.
There are also IUDs but I'm iffy on those after seeing all those law ads saying "if you've use mirena and such and such disease/infection please call us now"
As with everything approved by the FDA, there are going to be risks and warnings. This is not a reason not to get one, but IS a good reason to go over those risks with your doctor. And ignore the ads that say you have to have had a baby in the past before you can get one. Myself and my girl friends all have them, and none of us have ever had kids.

I second this, my OBGYN told me this is because women without children don't know what it feels like to have their cervix opened and thus is 'more' painful. I have had gf's argue with their dr's then go to a second dr who would prescribe them an IUD. Do your research and don't let them sway you from your decision. Its your body you can do what you want.

  • The sponge...it's like a sexual tampon
  • I used the NuvaRing for years and really liked it.

I couldn't have said it better! The insertion process of an IUD, while unpleasant, just feels like a bad menstrual cramp. That's how my doctor described it and how it was for me both times. She recommended taking 4 ibuprofen beforehand (4 over-the-counter pills=1 rx pill), which I did, and had no problems. Good for your gfs for standing up for themselves. :)

  • I got the skyla IUD (3 year).
  • I second NFP/FAM. It's just as effective as hormonal birth control with ZERO side effects!
  • We use FAM! It's great. We will at most "fool around" before ovulation, and afterwards it's go time! I temp and it is a crystal clear sign of ovulation.

No side effects and I'm never surprised by a period!
  • agreed, FAM! :)

  • Someone that doesn't want a bc that they have to take every day isn't likely to be successful with FAM. Just thought I'd point that out.

I'm glad someone said something like this. I worked at Planned Parenthood as a peer educator for all 4 years of high school, so I'm familiar with most types of birth control. FAM can be great, and effective, but like many other things it has to be used consistently and correctly in order for it to work--and the attention to detail needed for this method in particular is much greater than, say, the patch.

Not judging, but I'd merely like to point something out. Depending on what you mean by "fooling around," pre-ejaculate can still lead to pregnancy.
