Budgeting/money management software?

What do you use for your money management and budgeting?

I currently use Quicken for money management, and I have an Excel spreadsheet I use for budgeting (not that I've stuck to it lately!) but I'm curious as to what y'all use? I've not been incredibly pleased with Quicken, but can't seem to find anything I like better.

Oh, we also have Mint, but I'm not completely sold on it... There are some parts that I like (the fact that it's online and easy access to all my accts) but I'm not a huge fan of their budgeting tool.

So, what do you use? Or am I just WAY too picky and should just use what I have and chill out a little bit? :)

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

Re: Budgeting/money management software?

  • I've never used an accounting system for budgeting but DH and I did make excel spreadsheets to figure out our income/expenses/savings before marriage, after marriage, after buying our house and then with our construction.
We have been very good at putting our savings away and not touching it until we started our renovations. We also are not crazy shoppers so our misc expenses aren't very high ever.

The spreadsheet was really helpful for us because it was a simple way of showing what we have and what we can spend from that.

  • Same as you.  Quicken and an Excel spreadsheet.  I used Microsoft Money before they retired it.  That's when I moved to Quicken.  I tried Mint for a while but never thought it fit my needs very well.

  • I liked Mint but you can't link business accounts to it so I don't do that now.  Now we use excel but but I really need to get a financial adviser at this point.

  • I just use Mint. Most of the time anymore I just do a budget on an Excel spreadsheet and that works for me.

  • We use YNAB (You Need a Budget) and LOVE it. There is a one-time cost of $60 but it's totally worth it, IMO. It's really helped us budget and save.

  • @flamingo86 I've heard of that one, but have never used it.  Happy to hear someone likes it. I'm just hesitant to spend money on a system.

Currently we use spreadsheets. I just downloaded free ones from Excel, and have been using those.  We have one spreadsheet for monthly and one for yearly. Then I also have another one for my business, and another one for our extra income. I'm one of those anal people who also has all of our savings in one account, but then separated out into different categories on a spreadsheet. So our "budget" workbook has 7 different tabs, but it works for us.

H and I also sit down on the 15th of the month to discuss where we're at with the monthly budget so far, then again on the 1st to see where we came out from the previous month.

I just spend all the money, is that not how you are supposed to do it? No, I use Mint. I have used Excel in the past, but we don't budget that closely so I don't bother anymore. Also, DH has no money sense, so he has no idea what is going on. Sometimes he asks if we have money to move to London yet and I'm like 'nope' and he moves along.

  • We don't use a budgeting tool per se, just keep tabs on our online balances. All of our bills are pre-scheduled direct debits, so that's not hard to keep track of. We have a monthly budget for food and miscellaneous expenses, which I keep track of online.

I don't use anything.  I know how much I make compared to how much has to go out for bills and gas and how much I should save that month, then whatever is left over for the month I divide that by how many weeks there are to give me my 'spending money' per week and that's it, budget done.

  • @brij2006 I was wary of paying for the software at first too, but now I'm sold. We were using excel before but it confused me a lot and YNAB keeps it all in one place and is very user-friendly, which I love. Of course if excel works for you that's great, but if you ever do want to try YNAB they do a 30-something day free trial.
