Can someone remind me... (Insurgent spoilers...no Allegiant spoilers)

I didn't re-read Insurgent. I feel like I remember the basics, but I'm lost on a detail.

Why did Edith Prior/the people who made the video feel like the faction community was going to breed a lot of Divergents if they are divided in factions and basically killed for being Divergent?

  • Thanks for asking this.
    :waits for answer:
One of the MANY things confusing me about this book so far.

I sure as hell don't! I'm waiting for an answer too and I'm getting to be pretty sure there isn't one.

I knew it! I don't even remember anything about the Divergent saving the outside world either so clearly I suck at this series in general.

I have a pretty good memory despite not re-reading.  I feel like she did not explain this at all.

All she said was that a day will come when Divergent become abundant. That is when Amity should unlock the gates and let everyone free.  She totally did not discuss why Divergent would multiply if they were targeted for elimination.

It's a society set up so that Divergent would have to live in hiding and would not be welcome. Why not build a society that would foster and develop Divergent vs one that works directly against developing Divergent?

I don't think you suck at the series, I think that it wasn't explained.  Didn't you reread this with  Madison too?

Unless that was not its original intention. Maybe it became that way under Jeanine's rule (or her predecessor)?  I can't remember the leadership lineage from Divergent - who was the leader before Jeanine?  How long have the factions been around?

I read it- then Madison decided to read the series. It was supposed to be the next Madison Monday series. Then she went away camping and read the first 2 books in less than 4 days while away! She loved them- hence no Madison Monday.

    Ok, good.

I'm curious why no one in the story is questioning it.

Understatement! She has been counting down. Of course, she's been barraged with homework this week so she only got to chapter 6 last night (and that was with staying up much too late)

There is and it isn't a 'lets tie this up with a pat answer' explanation. at least to me it fits with the info we had up to that point.

  • I mean, outside of what is and is not in the books, isn't it sort of human nature to be divergent?  I don't think anyone anywhere naturally fits nicely into a little personality box.
  • Ya I just re-read Insurgent and there was no mention of that anywhere.

Again Allegiant explains the reason for factions which gets into your question.

  • I just finished Insurgent, and here is my theory: The created the factions to foster one virtue, but they were hoping that in the process a few people would become more than just one virtue. But because of the video, people (Jeanine) became afraid of the Divergent, since they though that if there were a lot of Divergents, the society will be over as they know it, hence they started killing them. I think the original intent was lost though. Now on to Allegeant to find out if I am right! :)

I'm only about 100 pages in to Allegiant, but this is one of my BIGGEST BEEFS with both the end of Insurgent and now Allegiant.

I am perfectly, totally fine with having a lot of stuff up in the air, with finding stuff out as I go and understanding there are lots of unanswered questions.  But somehow the way these books are written makes me feel like I must have just missed something - NOT like I'm waiting to find something out.

  • I just finished a post Allegiant reread of Divergent.  I thought Roth made it pretty clear in Divergent that it wasn't until Jeanine assumed the leadership position in Erudite that they began tracking down Divergent and killing them.  I don't feel comfortable saying more without the risk of Allegiant spoilers. But this fits together with what it learned about the simulation serum and Tris' mother in Allegiant.

Divergent makes it clear that the killing of Divergents wasn't always happening. It was more or less only happening for a generation.

YES. Like in the Raven Boys books, I hardly have any idea what's going on. But I trust that Maggie Stiefvater DOES and she's going to slowly provide that info when it's needed.

I don't have that same trust with V-Roth.
