Dear Community,

Our tech team has launched updates to The Nest today. As a result of these updates, members of the Nest Community will need to change their password in order to continue participating in the community. In addition, The Nest community member's avatars will be replaced with generic default avatars. If you wish to revert to your original avatar, you will need to re-upload it via The Nest.

If you have questions about this, please email help@theknot.com.

Thank you.

Note: This only affects The Nest's community members and will not affect members on The Bump or The Knot.

Personal Development

We are going through a re-org at work, and it was suggested that we work on personal development as well as professional development. While some programs and trainings will be provided, I was wondering if anyone had a good resource that they use or like.

TIA!

Re: Personal Development

  • Do you like to read? Try
Crucial Conversations (about both personal and professional communication).
Drive (all about what motivates people in life & work)
I, Mammal (best accessible book about brains and what makes people tick, then how to exploit it in yourself)
Tao of Pooh (totally serious - it changed how I see myself in the world dramatically; skip the sequel)

This isn't comprehensive, it's just the first few I thought of that have moved me.

As far as trainings/groups, there is a TON of wisdom in the 12 steps philosophy. You may not feel like any groups apply to you, but some reading into the way they teach to take ownership for you actions, make amends for your mistakes, evaluate your character flaws, take action to grow into the person you want, etc. Life changing!

Then I guess it's a lifelong journey that you just commit to being on. I have a physical totem (an old ring) that I declared to be my 'personal growth reminder'. If I'm in a situation that has an 'easy way' out, or a way that might be good enough but if I was willing to push through some personal growth it could be great...I pick the growth. I pick the great! I like that visual reminder that this is a way I choose to live my life all the time.
  • Thank you for the recommendations and the perspective!
