Car Seat - Safety Question

So DH was in an accident last night and we're thinking that his car is totaled.  He is OK ....  thank goodness!!

My question though is about the base for our car seat.  All of the damage to the car was in the front, nothing on the sides.  I'd rather be safe than sorry to get the car seat base inspected to make sure there was no damage to it and that we can still use it.  It's just the base, not the carrier.  Where would I begin to look for that?  Would local fire departments be able to tell if it was still safe to use or do I have to go somewhere else for something like that?

Re: Car Seat - Safety Question

  • Maybe it's just me - but I would just buy a new base. I don't think they are that expensive. It will give you peace of mind and save your time and energy. Plus the insurance company might pay for it, I would check into that.

I kind of have a rule about saving my time, energy and worry. If it only costs $30 to replace it, IMO it isn't worth it. :-)

  • Glad your DH is okay. I would guess it needs to be replaced but you can call the manufacturer to be certain.

I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
  • Its a good idea to see if insurance would cover it. I also agree with BSD to call the manufacturer and ask. They would give you a conservative answer anyway. Glad your husband is okay!

  • Glad he is okay! I would suggest talking to the insurance company about it. In most cases, there will be an issue with the safety of the base, even if you can't see any issues with it. IMO  would definitely have it replaced. The insurance company should pay for it though.

  • There is no way to inspect the base for damage. It will have to be replaced. Whoever was at fault for the accident will have their insurance company reimburse you for the car seat base.

  • I have a close friend that is a firefighter and he told me once that any accident over a fender bender and he would consider a car seat base totaled too.

I would just replace it personally. Glad your husband is ok! Scary!

  • Thanks ladies!! I'm thinking we would be better to just get a new one too. I did tell DH to see if we can claim it through insurance so hopefully that will work out ...
Now on to car shopping ...

  • So sorry about the car accident, but happy to hear your DH is okay.

I work in insurance, and you can usually file any part of the car seat as part of the claim.  I've never seen an insurance company decline replacing one (even just the base).  So it's worth a shot to see if they would replace it as part of the claim.

    Good luck car shopping.

  • We talked to insurance and we just need to send the receipt to them for the new base.  I feel so much better knowing we will be getting a new one that is safe.

  • We were in a wreck when I was 8 months pregnant and the base was in our car. We replaced it even though it looked fine. I didn't want to risk it.
