Funny/Ridiculous Story

DH and I are planning to spend next Christmas (2014) in NYC.  It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.  I have this romantic notion of walking through Central Park on Christmas morning with the perfect cup of coffee.

So, just for fun, I decided to see what a night at The Plaza would cost.  (Note: yes, we travel as much as we can, but we travel fairly economically.  We could never afford to stay at The Plaza.) Their “best rate” for Christmas Eve is $867.  But here’s the kicker: you still have to pay $14.95 for wifi!  I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes.

  • I can't believe people actually pay that!

  • That sounds like so much fun! And also, that is a lot, but I am not that surprised, even though I have no idea what is the norm for NYC hotels. The only time I've been to NYC, we stayed in an old convent in The Bronx because we were doing missionary work.

  • The fact that that place will probobly be booked solid for Christmas at that price is what gets me. How nice it must be to drop almost a grand for a one night stay.
  • I cannot even fathom spending that much for a single night's hotel stay. And no free wifi?! What the hell?

Hope you can find someplace muuuuuuch more affordable than that!

  • I hate that!  I've always been fascinated by the fact that upscale hotels charge while budget hotels do not.  And what I've learned is that basically, the charges are driven by what the market will bear (like anything in the economy).  They think that if travelers are willing to pay a premium to stay at high-end properties, the hotel can get away with charging for wifi, because customers will pay it.  At least that's the assumption.  And most times it's probably true, even if the customer isn't happy about it.

  • Wow.  I knew that place was fancy schmancy, but wow.

Honestly, though, take your cup of coffee, walk by, and duck inside.  Go downstairs to the Todd English Food Hall.  We stumbled on it last time we were there, and LOVED it. It will be somewhere we go every trip now. Not the cheapest place, but we just did salads and shared an app, and it made for a pretty filling lunch. And beverages, of course. :)

You're right, though, NYC is pretty magical (to visit, I imagine the locals HATE it) that time of year.. as long as you expect, and are okay with massive amounts of people sharing your personal space, and long long long lines. ;)

Christmas in NYC is beautiful, you're going to have a great time.  That's crazy that they still charge for wifi with a room that expensive.  Part of me thinks it'd be really cool to stay, just for one night, even though it's crazy expensive.  I feel like it'd be one of those 'once in a life time' splurges.

  • I have the same fantasy about NY at Christmas, and want to go one day too. It sounds so romantic! My pet peeve is hotels charging for wifi. When we stayed at Ceasars palace in may, it was the same thing (well it was more like $300/night) and $15 for wifi on one device in your room or $25 per device on the property per day! Ridiculous! At that price throw in the wifi!

Or... If you split it between, say, 15 of your favorite nestles, it doesn't sound so bad after all... 885/15? That's like $60 each. May not be quite as romantic, but you can't beat that price. I can sleep in the tub. ;)

That was my first thought! Epic gtg! I bet you have to pay a premium for parking too!

  • Ugh...I would never pay that to stay at a hotel here...that's obscene. You can find hotels in the outer boroughs for much cheaper if you are open to staying in BK or Queens. Try Long Island City or Williamsburg ;)

Oh, and if you do come to NY, check this out:
