I'm over Mint.com - any other suggestions?

Hi all,

I've had a love-hate relationship with Mint.com for awhile now.  I love that it's free, I hate that it has glitches.  The most recent glitches involve double-reporting many transactions and also failing to categorize many transactions at all... so my budget page is completely screwed up.  I did some googling to figure out how to fix it, and turns out this is a known problem with no solution.

So I'm over it.

Before I resign myself to manually entering everything onto a google doc, does anybody else have suggestions for other tools or software to try?  I've thought about Quicken, but it looks like it is software that you have to download to a single computer.  I would like to be able to track progress online so H and I can view it at our leisure from any computer.  I actually pay most of our bills during my lunch break at work.  And H likes to look at those things in the evening before going to bed.

I may have to just face the fact that I'll have to do it manually from now on.  I used to do it manually before we got married, but after we got married the number of accounts I was tracking basically doubled.  We're getting to the point where we have so many different accounts (retirement, credit cards, utilities, student loans, investment accounts, hopefully a mortgage and escrow accounts next year etc.) that it would be nice to have some program do it for us.

So any thoughts?  TIA!

  • Our bank actually offers an on-line service for free that I can link with other accounts.  It is a bit annoying at times to have to go through all the steps to categorize some types of transactions, but overall we have been satisfied with it.  You could check and see if your bank (or maybe one of the other places that is holding your money) offers a similar service.
  • Thanks!  I never thought to look there - it seems as though Fidelity has one called Full View.  The platform doesn't look as fancy as Mint, but if it actually works it will be 100 times better.  It's also free!

I will report back after giving it a try.

  • Well it looks like Fidelity's platform isn't glitchy, but it doesn't have all the options I want it to have.  For instance, it doesn't have a goal function, which is something that I liked about mint.

I feel like developing an inexpensive, non-glitchy, high-customizable financial program is the next million dollar idea.  It really shouldn't be that hard to create one that isn't a pain to use...  Any takers?

  • I haven't tried it, but Credit Karma recently added an option to link accounts for budgeting.

  • I'll check that out too - thanks!

What I really want, and I'm certain it doesn't exist, is a budgeting tool that will let me re-define the calendar month for various credit cards.  Because really, when I swipe my Amazon card on September 15, that charge isn't being paid for until Oct. 28.  So that charge should actually be matched with October money, rather than September money.  But my debit card should be tied to September money when I swipe it on September 15, because it comes out of my account instantaneously.  I want to be able to customize it for each card.

Obviously, if you stay within your budget for every category, all the time, every month, it evens out regardless of when the charge is actually paid for.  But most of us don't stick to our budgets for one category or another any given month, and I want a more accurate picture of how much money will be left in my account at the end of October given the dates my credit cards close.  Then if I need to finesse one category to account for going over in another I can do so.  Otherwise I might make a large purchase at the end of September and also at the beginning of October, but I'll be stuck paying for them at the same time.

And yes, I'm a bit lazy and don't want to pull out the calculator to figure it out myself.

Am I the only one who thinks this way?  Sigh.  I should just get off my bum and do it myself I suppose.

  • Haha I just deleted my mint.com account 5 minutes ago before reading this. I get no value from it because I login to my accounts so often, anyway.
  • I love the idea of Mint but H was skeeved out about giving our financial info to more sites than necessary. Their security seems good, but I can see his point. It's good old spreadsheets for us now! I set our budget (H is cool with this) and tend to update it at the end of the day while relaxing on the couch.
  • I just recently learned about www.learnvest.com.  I have not used it yet but I did check it out, looks to be comparable to mint.com.  Has anyone else used this program?
