Thanksgiving Ideas for Two

So first year not doing anything for Thanksgiving with family, and I really don't know where to start! DH is in the military and we moved from WA to FL in June, and I'm super homesick, so I'm looking to make this Thanksgiving really special for us. Any ideas (dinner, dessert), or things to do that could lead to possible traditions while we're here on our own? Any advice, tips, or links to your favorite recipes would be so appreciated!

Re: Thanksgiving Ideas for Two

  • I completely understand what being homesick feels like, I'm sorry you're going through it.

Instead of being focused on that horrible feeling, try making this a super extra fun and memorable Thanksgiving. I feel like whenever I have family Thanksgivings everything is super traditional -- it's nothing out of the ordinary. If I were to have a Thanksgiving just me and my significant other, I would want it to be everything that we love. For example, I hate cranberries. HATE THEM! I wouldn't even bother making anything with cranberry in it! You should make all of your favorite foods and all of your husband's favorite foods if you decide to cook! You guys could also take this holiday to start making your own traditions! Maybe talk about things that you wish you were able to do on the Thanksgiving holiday growing up but were never able to do it. Maybe you guys can start a new tradition, something that when you host the holiday one day in the future you can tell everyone that you and your DH started XYZ tradition and you're excited for everyone to be a part of it!

  • This was me last year! We moved 14 hours away from family and Thanksgiving was the first Major Holiday we wouldn't see them. I was devastated being so far from my family so we decided to be proactive and make the Holiday ours. I started looking at recipes and making plans with my husband as to what we would want. We made everything together; Turkey, Stuffing, Potatoes, Rolls and a dessert (apple crisp for two). We bought two bottles of wine, some candles and dressed up for each other and ate around 8, and went for a walk afterwords. It was all very sweet and I will look on out first little Thanksgiving fondly.

At the stores they usually sell just turkey breast if you're worried about having a ton of food. It's by the larger turkeys.

We also bought our first Christmas tree and put it up on Thanksgiving to be a tradition for Many more years. ( I know not everyone will do that but my Grandmother always had hers up before Thanksgiving so her and I put ours up at the same time.)

Be sure to call Family on that day it helps to reflect and know they're thinking of you even though you're not there.
  • You could do Cornish game hens instead of a giant turkey.
  • We might be alone this year for Thanksgiving too. No worries, that is why you have each other. Lean on one another and trust this is the beginning of great things in a new state.

We order our Turkey from GreenBurg Turkey. They deliver to your door and all you have to do is heat since I don't know how to do a turkey and I don't have time for that this has always worked for us. We have the traditional side dishes, Green Bean Casserole (easy to make), sweet potatoes (easy), gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc. My H's family does Chicken and Dumplings. Find a Cracker Barrel close by and just buy them if that is what you are into. We also do a Mac and Cheese Recipe from Alton Brown on the Food Network Channel that is awesome. Don't forget the pumpkin pie with whip cream.

We put up our Christmas Tree the day before or after depending on our schedules. We hang out, watch football, play football, Scrabble, Wii, etc. All of these you can do together as a couple. Skype with your family.

We are in the same boat... he's in the Marines and we just relocated from Texas to North Carolina and can't make it home for the holiday. I think he told me he gets a 96 so we may try and do a weekend getaway so I don't have to cook a huge Thanksgiving dinner for 2..!
  • I would also check to see what holiday events are happening where you live now. Being in the service you will move frequently so take advantage of what each place has to offer. Some places have light festivals that start Thanksgiving night.

Where in FL are you? In Orlando in Dec they have christmas in the park where they bring out tiffany stained glass window http://morsemuseum.org/programs-events/christmas-in-the-park.

  • I would just cook a smaller version of all the classic Thanksgiving foods and make it a romantic night in. You'll have a nice memory of cooking your first solo Thanksgiving together, and you could pick a fun desert or funky main dish to add your own tradition to the table.
  • Last year we were still dating and it was easier just to spend Christmas apart with our families. We would pick a night close to Christmas, buy the smallest turkey we could find (9 lbs) and made our own little feast. Then later on we'd open our presents to each other. It was a lot of fun and probably one of my favourite "dates". I never thought I would be able to cook a turkey but it's surprisingly easy, give it a try! :)
