Clutter Bug

DH and I have been married 3 years in may, he brought soooo much stuff, massive amounts of clothes and shoes and DJ stuff. He already took over the spare bedroom, and has a dresser, and half our small closet. There are literally shoes and things everywhere. being tidy and orderly was not something that was stressed when he was growing up I think. Is there a way I can get him to A. let go of some stuff, and B. Get him to be receptive to it instead of having a fit?

Re: Clutter Bug

  • My H threw away a ton of stuff before he moved in. He still came with a ton of stuff! I don't think he's thrown away so much as a pair of jeans his mom has bought him in the past 10 years. I feel your pain.

I did get him to clean out his closet before we moved to our house. I told him what I do...if I haven't worn it in 2 years I'm not going to miss it. It took about a month, but one day I got home from work and he had cleaned out his closet. He certainly kept way more than needed, but it was a start.

Two things I have found that work are letting him do things in his own time (within reason) and picking one thing at a time. For example, say this weekend you're going to organize shoes. Give him a bag for donate shoes. Once you know how many pairs are being kept, go get an organizer for them.

Tell him how important it is for you to feel comfortable that your home is neat and organized.

If all else fails, watch a Hoarders marathon with him...that show makes me cringe and clean things I've already cleaned!
