NBR: Opinions requested - Possible baby name for our LO

We are a religious family, and we like picking names that have a religious meaning. We've been looking at lists of names for our newest little daughter.

We like the name Ariel, or maybe the spelling Arielle. (I always pronounce it as AIR-E-ELLE in my head).  It means Lion of God.

My big hangup is that I can only think of The Little Mermaid.  Is it just me? Is it too weird to name your kid the same name as The Little Mermaid? Will everyone who meets her think of The Little Mermaid?

I know this is the book board, but I thought I would get less hormonal opinions here where I sometimes post than over on the Tri Board.

Thanks in advance for your viewpoints....

  • I think of The Little Mermaid when I hear the name Ariel, even if it is spelled differently.  Some friends of mine have a dog that their little girls decided to name Ariel because of The Little Mermaid.  Are you thinking of any other names?

  • Yes we are thinking of a few other names. I just thought I'd see if others think only of The Little Mermaid. Maybe it's a generational thing since it was a popular movie when I was maybe 9 or so. I don't know any real life Ariels.

  • I first think of TLM, but it's one of those things where if I knew her IRL it wouldn't take long for me to associate the name with her instead. I have a classmate named Ron and I only thought of HP the first time I heard it, then it was just his name. If that makes sense?

  • I have an Arielle in my class and she says "it's pronounced Ariel, like the Little Mermaid."

This, I think if you love the name then go for it.
  • I think anyone's first association will be The Little Mermaid. But, once they know your daughter they won't really make that connection anymore. You should ask the Baby Names board on the Bump, they are really helpful and knowledgable.
  • I think of TLM, but it's a nice name.

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • I was friends with an Arielle and she pronounced it Air E Elle; she's who I think of!

    I like the name.

  • Yes, my first thought was "Little Mermaid".

  • I would pronounce Arielle - Ahr-ee-el.  I definitely think TLM when I see Ariel written down, but I have taught several students with this name (boys and girls), and when I see the kid, I never think "mermaid".
  • I think that every name has some sort of connotation for many people, but if you love it, you should use it. I like spelling it Arielle, since Ariel is the spelling in TLM.

  • I know two Ariels... And they are both men!  Pronounced more like "Ah-ree-el".  I do not think of the mermaid at all.  (Although one of the guys does make that joke now and then.  "Yes!  My name is Ariel!  Just like Disney's Mermaid Princess!"   He is a hoot.)

I'd spell it Arielle if I were you.   I wish my name had a more feminine spelling.

  • I just met an Ariel and it took about 2 days before I dropped the TLM connection. I think it's a good name and if you like it, go for it.

My first thought is TLM but is that really a bad thing?  It's a cute movie.  I say if you like the name go with it.

  • If you like the name, go for it.  I agree with everyone else that at first people will associate the name with TLM but after a little while will get over it.  It's a nice name.  It's not like you're naming your kid Snow White or something.

  • I think of the Little Mermaid and the Tempest (Shakespeare). I have a friend who named her daughter Arielle. I think its a beautiful name- no matter where it came from.

  • DH's best friend's wife is named Ariel. I may have sung the song "Kiss the Girl" from The Little Mermaid to her the first time I ever met her (we were at a baseball game and I had a few too many sweet tea vodka lemonades). She still hates me to this day and she hates The Little Mermaid. She's a bit of a stick in the mud if you know what I mean.
That said, I think it's a pretty name and if you like it go for it. It will only be weird if your daughter has red hair, a fish tail, and only wears a purple sea shell bra (or if you pick the middle name Flounder).

I was just about to say that I would definitely think of TLM and sing her songs from the movie all the time lol

I also agree that if you like it, use it.  It's a pretty name.  I think some people will have something to say about what your name your child regardless of what you decide.

This. If you love the name, go for it! You'll find associations for any name you can think of, it will drive you mad.

Some people don't feel that the Baby Name board is helpful. Snark and flames are especially prevalent on the hormonal baby boards at times.

Interesting. I used to be a very active member on that board and I have always liked their honesty. They have no patience for Youneeke spellings, made up names, and boy names on girls, but other than that people are actually helpful. I mean, it's not sunshine and rainbows if you go asking about Neveah, which I like. From what I've seen it's not the regulars who are hormonal.*shrug*
  • Um...I've rarely encountered a Bump board that wasn't full of crazy snarky hormonal biatches.

Also, I think the name Ariel/Arielle is beautiful and while their might be an initial Disney connotation, it's still super pretty and befitting a sweet little girl. Now if you wanted to name her Mulan or Pochahantas or Rapunzel, then I could see your issue.
