Question re S/A

I have a quick question. H had his S/A done last week (yay), and the Dr. called with the results today.

We don't have the official #'s, those are being mailed to us - the dr. said the count and motility were normal but he mentioned that the shapes were a 'little abnormal' then said that's not really a problem.

I guess I'll wait until we get the official #s in the mail, but I'm more concerned about the abnormal shape part....

Anyone else here know anything or have any experience with this?

Re: Question re S/A

  • I would ask the doctor for further explanation and recommendations. I would want the numbers interpreted. Was the doctor a urologist?

  • The "shape" your doc is referring to is called "morphology." It's literally how many sperm are considered shaped normally. If you Google morphology, you can get more specific information. Once you get the SA results in the mail, you can see exactly what the percentage was. If it's high enough (I believe even as low as 5-10% can be considered normal, although I've read 15% too), then you really have nothing to worry about.

I'm glad to hear his count and motility were good!

  • Yes, the dr was a urologist, and my H was at work when he called, so my H just told me real quickly over IM this. He'll give me full details on what the dr said when I get home and I guess once we get the physical results with the #s, my H can call him back with our questions. Without the numbers, we won't really know what to ask, but those should come by tomorrow/Wednesday the latest.

But yea, does anyone know if abnormal shapes can cause issues? I imagine if the dr was concerned by that, he would have told my H, but he didn't seem to think this was such a big deal. We shall see, but aside from that, the counts and everything else are normal, so I guess the next logical step would be to move onto testing for me....

  • Our urologist was less then helpful. We had low count and low morph and all he could say was it only takes 1 to get you pregnant. Umm... Thanks. We went straight to a RE after that who was much more helpful for us.

Yea, I'm not really expecting a whole lot from the urologist in that department, but it was more important to just get the numbers, see what they are before determining what the next steps are going to be. Neither of our insurance has any coverage for infertility, but luckily his covers the testing for him which was important to at least rule him out first.

Now the tricky part is going to be figuring out the testing for me since my gyn is useless and extremely unhelpful. Basically, she just does a pap, sends you on your merry way, then collects her $ from the insurance. No blood work, no other testing, absolutely nothing. She clearly hasn't read Taking Charge Of Your Fertility either, otherwise she would have mentioned that not every woman has a 28 day cycle. Definitely switching doctors. pfffft.

  • From my understanding, low morph indicates that there are not enough "normal" sperm to fertilize the egg. Abnormally shaped sperm have trouble fertilizing the egg. A normal sperm's shape allows for effective penetration (that word is so dirty to me right now, but it's all I can think of) of the egg, I think.

I hope the results come in quickly so you can get some peace of mine. Please feel free to share them here; we can help you interpret them.

  • lol @ penetration

Assuming the results went out in the mail today, we should be getting them tomorrow or Wednesday. Mail gets delivered pretty quickly around here ;)
  • Yes low morphology can cause problems but it has to be taken in context of the results.

Normal morph is anything over 4%. But I know there are some girls on here whose DH's has lower % but high count so it balances out. FWIW my DH's morphology was 2% and it was never brought up as a problem to us.
