*Eli* Allegiant SPOILERS

Why will you never read anything she writes in the future? Just because Tris dies?

Re: *Eli* Allegiant SPOILERS

  • I liked the ending.  I thought it was very realistic.

I HATE the "teenagers living happily ever after endings".  In my reality 16 year olds break up and don't live happily ever after.  At least this way I can live with the fact that Four will love Tris forever and they won't grow apart and break up.
    90 books in 2015?

  • The ending didn't bother me either. I think it was more just that the whole book was disappointing. Maybe my expectations were too high. I loved Divergent. I liked Insurgent. I thought Allegiant was just barely okay.

  • Yes, because I'm pissed at her and have no interest in supporting her ever again.  I am pissed that the whole beginning of the book Tris is all "I want to live. I will never go to my death again..." blah blah blah. And then that ending contradicted everything she said before. For her brother who she hated? Who betrayed her? It was just ridiculous, IMO. Caleb dying would have meant something. It would have been his redemption. I personally felt like VR just killed her off for shock value. I don't want to be manipulated. Yes, it is something she might have done. But I don't think it was the right thing to do. And I could barely bring myself to read the last 20 pages because I was so pissed, so yeah, I'm going to sit here in my irrationally irate corner and hate her for making me feel this way.

Also, I was disappointed with the book as a whole. It was mediocre compared to the other two. It was confusing and strange and the characterization was not consistent and what killed me the most was how they learned that they were an experiment. I kept thinking "Seriously? That's it? That's how we find out about this?"

It's okay if you guys don't feel the same as me. I'm not asking for validation, just stating what I feel. I did like some things about it, before the ending. The language, her use of imagery was lovely. The pacing was pretty good. Four is hot. But all of that can't make up for how angry I am that she ruined the whole series with that shitty ending.

I don't read books to be pissed as all fuck when I finish. If I want that, I can just watch the news. I much prefer teenagers living happily ever after because this is all make believe anyway, people.

    I agree, @booneybear.

However, I could have done without the Epilogue.  I felt like VR tried to make it "right" by attempting to tie everything up in a cute little package.

I agree. And I think, especially after reading VR's blog post about the ending, that it truly fit Tris. The sacrifice and her decision to take Caleb's place.

  • Lurker chiming in. Y'all know I haven't read this series yet, but I've been following the chatter. Anyway, the interview VR linked from her blog specifically mentioned her conversion to Christianity and how she's drawn to themes of self-sacrifice. Those of you who've read the last book, did you get the feeling there's a religious message buried in there?

    Not at all.

  • I just finished. I didn't like it. I don't think I hated it as much as Eli but it just didn't feel like the first 2 books. I didn't think the story was as strong. I was confused for a good portion of the first half of the book (though that could be my fault for not rereading). I don't care that she killed off Tris but I do agree with Eli it came across as a shock value vs a good plot point. I think my biggest complaint through the entire book was Four. I feel like it was Edward in Breaking Dawn all over again. It was as if his character had a personality change in this book and it bothered me so much. Where was strong charismatic Four from the first two books?
Whatever. I read it. I am glad I am done. Can't wait to discuss with Madison tonight (she finished on Sunday).

I haven't read her blog but no, I never felt like there was a religious message in there.  There is mention of a god a couple times but I didn't take that any religious message.

Not really. I mean, not anymore than any book where someone sacrifices their life for "the greater good".

OMG EXACTLY. I was trying to figure out who he reminded me of in this book but it was anyone but the Four from books 1 and 2. Maybe it was the dual perspectives and actually seeing what was going on in his head, but I didn't recognize him.

  • Can we talk about Amar for a minute? AMAR WAS HOT FOR FOUR?! What!? Where did that come from? I read that line was like, WTF Tris? How did you even know to ask? It totally came out of left field and served no purpose IMO other than to introduce another gay character. Like so many things in Allegiant, his revelation felt forced.

I actually had speculated he was gay based on how he comforted George and how G was looking at A. I think A being hot for Four was not that shocking, IMO.

    I agree!

I just don't agree with her decision to kill Tris.  I don't need a super happy fairytale ending.  I understand that war = death but you don't kill your MC!

Caleb?  Sure!  Christina?  Okay.  Four?  I wouldn't have liked it but I would have accepted it more than Tris.

2.5 books were in Tris' "voice" then that voice just disappears for the last few chapters?  It didn't feel right.

I guess I don't buy Tris's sudden forgiveness of Caleb.  She spent 3/4 of Allegiant hating him for what he did.  Then, in the heat of the moment, she suddenly decides to forgive him because he's her brother and he held her hand when she was in the hospital?

    Sigh.  Maybe I'm just a cold-hearted bitch.
