Not TTC, quick birth control question

Hey ladies :) I just got married on the 12th and I started my second week of pills this week. Saturday I forgot to take the pill so I took two on Sunday, yesterday I forgot again so should I take two again today? We plan to start trying in about 5 years :). Thanks!

Re: Not TTC, quick birth control question

  • Oh just to clarify, we haven't been having sex because we want to wait for the birth control to kick in.
  • I was a sex ed peer educator throughout high school. If I remember right, if you forget one you're supposed to "double up" the next day and also use a backup method for a week. The most common backup method being of course a condom. It could depend on your specific pill whether or not you should double up, however. You may want to call your doctor or pharmacy and ask to be certain.

Since you aren't going to TTC for several years, have you thought about lower-maintenance forms of BC? I have the Mirena IUD and love it; I've also used the patch and the ring in the past. I was never able to remember to take my pill at the same time every day.

  • I would do another form of birth control but we are on a tight budget right now and my bc pills already cost $50 a prescription. If we had more money I would certainly be begging him to have a baby haha, but I know we are trying to build our finances

  • If you aren't ready to have kids, I'd suggest switching to a birth control that you won't/can't forget. In 2 weeks you've already forgotten twice. I'd say if you don't switch there will be an "oops" baby in your future
  • Once you miss 2 doses, I believe you are supposed to throw out the pack, start a new one and use back up birth control. You can ask your pharmacist or read the package insert.

It sounds like you need a lower maintenance form of bc or you are going to have some surprises.

  • I was in the nuvaring for a while and liked it much better than the pill. Could that be an option for you? I don't know how much they cost because I was on a program through the state of California to get them for free. And now we just use condoms. I would imagine they'd be close in cost to the pill though.

  • What really helped me was setting a reminder on my phone.  That is the only way I have managed to take any form of time sensitive medication correctly.

  • I was going to say what @littlelady77 said. When I was first on the pill I had a little alarm that came with my birth control that you set to remind you every day. Or if you go to bed every night at the same time, put it by your alarm clock so when you set it, it will remind you.

  • Same with me. I had an alarm set (I took it at 4:30 - middle of Oprah haha) and that was the only way I'd remember.

I'd suggest you call your doc or read the instructions that come in your pill pack to find out what to do with this cycle.

I wouldn't throw in the towel on the pill yet - it does take a while to form a new habit.

  • Ditto PP. But definitely wrap it up either way for back up this cycle.

  • I never got used to taking my pills properly and eventually switched to the patch. I love it and it works with my ccrap memory.

If you are going to have sex in your first couple months on the pill, and you forget, I would suggest using a secondary form, such as condoms. Also, yes, take two today.
