Wide Shoes for Kids

Nolan has wide feet.  Any recs on where to find deals on wide width shoes? We've done striderite, and the striderite outlet--but they're still pricey. I've also had a little success at 6pm.com--but this kid is rough on shoes, and his feet are growing much faster than Brinley's ever did.

Also--do boots (snow boots) come in wide widths?  I haven't been able to find any.

Thanks!

Re: Wide Shoes for Kids

  • We always got EJ's at striderite.  she had little meatball feet when she was younger but eventually they slimmed down (though she does still have a high instep).  We were spending about $50 on her shoes every 3 months.  I would pick something that would go with a lot of her clothes, but still be able to be played in. She just didn't fit into cheap shoes back then, and I was happier to have her fitted for shoes that would feel comfortable on her chubby little feet. Also, she never wore her shoes in the house. I was lucky that she kept them on in the car. so perhaps they got less wear because she is such a bare-foot kinda gal.
  • Have you looked an New Balance? This is what my nephew wore on his Fred Flinstone feet, heck my husband still has the best luck with them on his Fred Flinstone feet.

  • I always did Payless, but I have found that the selection of Wides is better for girls than boys, surprisingly enough! (I found the exact same shoes in Kohls that Payless sells.)

As for boots... I don't remember seeing Wides in them. I would just buy a half size (or even full size) up in them; by the time you put a couple of pairs of socks on their feet, the fit would be perfect.

Oh yeah - we just went to Famous Footwear for good sneakers for Gavin and they had the shelves easily marked for Wides. In the end, he felt the 1/2 size up was more comfortable than the Wides.

    Good luck!

    My three sons!

  • Garrett has really wide, chubby feet with a high instep.  I've only really had luck at Stride Rite in finding shoes that fit him well. I've tried a few other brands in W width, or going up a size, but they are usually still pretty tight on his feet.  (He can pull off Crocs though!)  I try to shop sales, BOGO, etc. since they tend to be pricey.  The shoes hold up well (Garrett is pretty rough and tumble).  He did have one pair that started to fall apart a little at the toe, but they allowed us to exchange them for a different pair.
  • We deal with wide feet as well. Stride rite or skechers have been our best bets!
  • I have to buy DS XW shoes from stride rite.  His feet are so chubby that the velcro on those XW shoes STILL only close a little past halfway.  This year I got him a pair of XW shoes made by Saucony from Nordstroms and they fit him better than any other shoe I have ever bought him.  The velcro actually closes the whole way.  I've been very happy with them.
  • I was going to saw payless.  Even their medium widths seem super wide to me.

  • We found some shoes for DD at target that are not listed as wide but they are wide enough to fit her.  She's a wide in Stride Rite, but I find that Stride Rites run smaller than other brands.  In addition to 6pm I've had good luck on Ebay with gently used Stride Rites for a fraction of the price.  I always search for "EUC" (excellent used condition) and the shoes I've bought have been barely worn and I'll get them for under $15 including shipping.
