Disney goers - taking kids out of school

All of you Disney trips got me thinking.  We are planning to go to Disney May 2015.  Our oldest will be in kindergarten.  I was just wondering how it worked with taking your kids out of school for a week.  Did the school give you a hard time?  Did your kids do homework on the trip?  I'm not normally a fan of pulling kids out of school for vacations, but I am not going to Orlando in the middle of the summer.  Dh and I went to Disney pre-kids and I loved being there in May.  The weather was nice and the park was empty.

  • Jake is in kindergarten and he was out for 5 days.  I had to sign a paper that went to the district saying that it was an "educational field trip" but didn't have to provide any information about it at all (??)  they didn't even ask where we were going. They got back to me about 2 days later & said my request had been approved.

I also gave his teacher a heads up as well, and asked for any work he'd be missing.  She sent it home in a packet and we worked on it before we left and at the airport.

  • As the daughter of a teacher, we never missed school for trips. As a parent, I have Zero qualms about pulling my kids out of school (maybe high school ish is a little different because grades matter then). My problem will be making sure they don't miss more than the 15 or so they are allowed since they will always miss a week in October for one of my meetings!!!

  • My daughter is in Kindergarten and the process is the same (in Mars school district) as emmy mentioned for her son's in the North Hills School district.

We were going to go in Sept 2014 when DD would have been in 1st grade, but we got a deal for Feb we couldn't pass up.  I have mixed feelings about pulling kids form school in higher grades, but honestly, I wouldn't be going to Orlando in the summer either! Heat & humidity - blah!

  • I missed school for trips a few times when I was in school--in elementary, middle and high school.  And honestly it wasn't a big deal.

I do think it can depend on the kids though.  My brother and I were both good students, and didn't struggle at all in school, so missing a week or so was no big deal.

If my kid was having a really tough time in school, and I felt that missing a week would cause them to struggle to keep up, I would think twice about it.

I am also the daughter of a teacher.  Which is why I think it feels like "breaking the rules" lol.  But after my childhood experiences of Disney World in the summer, I WILL be taking the kids out of school to go.
