Hormone therapy

edited October 2013 in Pittsburgh Nesties

Ladies, I'm on the older end of this great group, so I might be hearing crickets... but has anyone looked into hormone therapy? If so, has it helped you? What was the consultation like?

I'm thinking about meeting with a specialist. I interviewed one last month for an article, as well as did a lot of research, and I'm pretty sure hormones (or lack of) is what's causing a lot of my issues. So, I am hoping anyone with experience or insight would chime in, please?!

Re: Hormone therapy

  • I'm not there yet, but it may not be long! I swear I'm in peri-menopause! LOL I just do not handle hormones as well as I used to, and I used to take a TON with the IVFs and all.  Maybe it's just the mentality that I'm going to be 40 in March...
  • I can't relate to the fertility drugs, Bethie, but I swear I'm in peri-menopause, too. I also turn 40 next year. The unfortunate thing is that these "symptoms" are affecting so much in my life! Blah.

  • Well, I think the fertility drugs are kind of like a menopause trial - you pump all these high levels of hormones into your body and enjoy the "ride" they cause, then you crash from them when it doesn't work and you stop taking them.  I used to handle it fine. Now, not so much.
  • Ugh. I'm sorry. :(

  • What kind of symptoms are you having?  Some people develop thyroid problems after giving birth.  Again, I don't know what your symptoms are but it might be worth getting your thyroid checked.

  • Good point about the thyroid. I've had mine checked though and everything is normal.

For me, I get migraines that are hormone related mostly. That and the general b!tchiness

I'll ditto this. If you haven't talked to your dr yet I'd see about getting some general blood work done. There are a lot of issues that can come up after having kids.

I have thyroid problems but mine started well before dd. but it's definitely something that can start out of nowhere after kids.

  • Thanks - I'm pretty sure it's not thyroid. I basically have restless sleep, b!ness, no libido whatsoever, heavy cycles, irritability, and mood swings.

The initial consultation will include blood work, which is helpful. I need to call my health insurance to see what my obligation is for the visit, and possible subsequent ones, but I know it can be pricey, even with them accepting my insurance. This is my biggest hesitation, I guess.
