Health Insurance

Not really MM related, but I'm not sure where else to ask. 
Has anyone had experience with having primary and secondary health insurance coverage? When DH and I got married in June, our plan was to add me and DS to DH's insurance and drop mine. DH is union and their insurance coverage is great, and the monthly premium is incredibly low. After getting through a hot mess of red tape I confirmed that we are covered and everything is good to go. My HR lady here at work just told me that our employer pays 100% of my health insurance premium, that my premium was for DS's insurance. So at first glance I don't see anything wrong with having double coverage, especially since LO is due in February. 

Is there any way that having double coverage could come bite me in the butt?

  • Not that I know of, but can't you each just get on your own policies? Why have both?
  • I've had overlapping health insurance policies when switching between different schools as a full-time student. It didn't cause me any trouble, but then again I'm in MA, and until ACA our laws were kind of different from most other states. In my case I had paid for both and the overlap was due to different sign-up periods, so wasting the money killed me.

    At one point, the health insurance I was actually using sent me a form to fill out explaining why I had two plans. I filled it out, sent it back, and nothing problematic ever came of it.
  • I've seen lots of back and forths between insurance carriers when it comes to primary vs. secondary, so I wouldn't say it's easier, but if your plan is 100% paid for, it doesn't hurt to keep it. Just know it might not be clean cut when it comes to claims. I do group benefits which is where I've seen the issues.

    We had planned to just have us all on DH's plan and cancel mine. His premium is
    much much lower and his plan is 90/10 while mine is 80/20. So he added me and DS in July after we got married. I just found out yesterday that my employer pays 100% of the premium for employees, so it would cost nothing to keep my insurance for just me through my job. I believe that my insurance plan covers 100% of childbirth expenses which would help come February. But either way I'm already covered under his insurance.

  • For us, both of our companies will not cover a working spouse who can get coverage at their place.  MW has our LO under her policy and when we get pregnant with #2 she will have everything covered through her insurance.
