Dr. Who fans, enter please

Based on my obsession with sci-fi, I should love this show. But I'm 3 episodes into season 1, and I'm not feeling it. Was the first season kind of weak for you, or is the whole series like this?

ETA: Season 1 of the newer version, not the stuff that aired when I was a kid.

  • Which Doctor are you starting with?

    My favorite Cake Wreck ever.

  • The guy with the black leather jacket who travels with Rose.

  • I wasn't sold on him as the doctor to be honest. The next seasons get better, IMO.

That's Christopher Eccleston.  I liked the first season enough and had a hard time accepting them changing the Doctor, I think I got as far as early Season 3 and kinda gave up on it.

  • The first season with Christopher Eccleston was a bit cheesy in my opinion (I still liked it but didn't OMG LOVE it), but the David Tenannt years really made me a die hard fan.

THIS!  The 10th Doctor is the best.
  • Is he the one with the bow tie? He's kind of hot.

  • If you're thinking about quitting, jump ahead and watch "Blink" (season 3, episode 10). It's a fantastic episode, and works well as a standalone episode, so you can watch it out of order without any major spoilers or missing context.

That was the first one I saw, and I started watching with XH mid-David Tennant. Later I went back to season 1, and I don't like it as much, but I was glad to catch up and get the back story. I have never been a fan of Rose either.

    Thanks, I'll do that.

  • I ditto the recommendations for skipping a head a bit.  If Tennant doesn't win you over, it's time to give up.  But I can't imagine anyone not loving him.

    Agreed. He's fantastic!

  • Mmm, David Tennant.

  • I don't remember if I liked Eccelston right away, but I was pretty annoyed when he left.  Tennant is a Big Change.  He took a while to grow on me because he was so different, but like everyone else, I eventually fell for him.  I agree with Julie.  If Tennant doesn't get you, it's not worth it.  I accept Matt Smith as the Doctor, and I still enjoy the show, but he's no David Tennant.

Blink is a good entry point, but I'd also watch "The Girl in the Fireplace" for a good look at Tennant and "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances (aka Capt Jack's first episode)" for Eccelston.  "The Eleventh Hour" is Matt Smith's first episode, and it does a good job of introducing him.

I found this list somewhere, and it's a pretty good collection of some of the best eps:
    1. Blink
    2. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
    3. Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (aka the first ep for River Song)
    4. Vincent and the Doctor
    5. The Girl in the Fireplace
    6. Human Nature/The Family of Blood
    7. The Girl Who Waited
    8. Father’s Day
    9. Amy’s Choice
    10. The Doctor’s Wife (aka the one by Neil Gaiman)

  • Thanks for the episode recs. I watched Blink, and it was awesome. Love those creepy-ass weeping angels!
