Baby nightmares, normal or no? (kinda freaky.. warning)

Ok so I'm going to admit I haven't been sleeping well, and I'm not feeling well (have a little bit of a cold) and I just feel blah.  That being said, last night I had the worst nightmare about my baby. In my nightmare she was just brought home, and I was soooo tired. I fell asleep for a minute (in my dream) and when I woke up, I couldn't get her to wake up. Then I realized that someone had switched her with a baby doll. I started freaking out. She looked so real, but was hard plastic. I picked her up and was looking at her trying to figure out what happened. Then all of a sudden she turned back into a real baby.  It scared me so much that I almost dropped her. My mom ran over and took her and handed her to DH and he told me that I was insane, and started screaming at me to get away from the baby. Then I started crying my eyes out, and then I woke up. I have been thinking about it all day. It makes me feel like I'm going to cry every time. I am about to lose it... Is this normal or is it a product of lack of sleep? Any suggestions on not having dreams like this? I dont think I can handle it if I have to have dreams like this much..

Re: Baby nightmares, normal or no? (kinda freaky.. warning)

  • That sounds awful. Maybe just some subconscious concerns about caring for a baby coming out? I had recurring nightmares that I fell asleep with my baby in bed and would wake up panicked that he was buried in the covers.

I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
  • I had some nightmares toward the end too. I do know that your diet can affect dreams sometimes from what I've heard, so maybe think back to what you ate yesterday. Maybe too much sugar or caffeine? Were you active yesterday? Maybe you didn't tire your body/brain out enough. Not sure if any of this will help, but it's worth trying to look into. I wouldn't want another dream like that, how creepy!

  • That's what I was thinking, but IDK why I would have so much anxiety while sleeping but not while awake.. Hopefully I will sleep better tonight.

  • Anxiety is just built up energy, I get it worse when I sit around and don't get much done.

  • I had an intense dream where the baby was crying inside me and everybody kept telling me I needed to take care of my baby but O couldn't do anything because it was still inside me. I remember clawing at my belly like it was yesterday.

I think it is totally normal but try to do something calm or relaxing before going to bed. I had to go like 20 minutes without watching TV or reading before bed because my dreams were so intense and crazy. Try meditating or breathing exercises. I would write lists or notes of everything on my mind.

Hope you don't have to deal with having another one. They are too real :( I am sorry you had this one!

  • I'm really sorry.

FWIW, I have been having vivid nightmares this entire pregnancy. Often. DH wakes me up sometimes and I am screaming. Anxiety/panic attacks are normal for me; nightmares are not. I'm chalking it up to pregnancy stuff

    It really sucks. ((Hugs))

  • It really is unnerving. I hope my anxiety problems don't come back in full force... It's been a while, but I used to get panic attacks and so I really hope it is just a fluke or short time thing.

  • Sounds like anxiety. It seems common after the baby is born for one or both parents to frequently have dreams/nightmares about the baby being in the bed and waking up searching the blankets. I went through that for a good couple of months before it finally went away. DH went through it some as well. It's scary!
