Re: Braxton Hicks: when did they start and what did they feel like?

  • They started about 20 weeks for me. At first I didn't really feel them, I just saw my stomach move and when I touched it it was rock hard for a few seconds. Towards the end of pregnancy I started feeling them as they happened. It felt like trying tighening a muscle yourself...but not. haha, great explanation right? When my water broke, I felt a really strong bh right before.

  • First pregnancy I only had a few and they happened around 32 weeks maybe. Basically felt like tightening. My whole belly would get hard but it didn't hurt.

Second time I had quite a few more and they started a lot earlier. Maybe around 20 weeks but I don't recall for sure.

  • Thanks ladies. I am 22 weeks and am trying to make out the different new feelings - movement vs gas vs RLP Vs BH.

  • First pregnancy I felt them around 20ish weeks. It just felt like tightening of my stomach muscles as if I was doing crunches. I'd get them in the middle of the night a lot and they'd wake me up but they weren't painful.

RLP was always more sudden or more of a zing. BH never hurt for me, but at worst were like a dull ach. I can't believe your 22 weeks! so exciting:)

    It's flying by!

Oh, I'm guessing I could be sore from standing for 11 hrs in the last few days too. I forgot about that.

  • I don't know when they started, but it was definitely in the second trimester. I didn't even really notice them most of the time, but when I was at my OB appointment the doc had to wait until it passed before he could measure. During the third tri they became uncomfortable at night and I would wake with back to back BH. During the last couple weeks I would get them while walking and they were actually fairly uncomfortable for me- enough so that I stopped going for nightly walks.

  • I had a few late in my second trimester, they've become more frequent the last week or 2. It just feels like my lower stomach is tightening and then relaxed a few seconds later. They never hurt and they usually occur after I've been standing or walking for awhile.

They always catch me off guard.

  • I started noticing them early third tri when I would get up in the middle of the night to pee. My whole stomach would tighten but they didn't hurt.
