Question for dog owners

My husband and I rescued a dog last January and we absolutely love him. Up until recently he was crated while we were at work and at night but as he has gotten a little older we leave him out now so he has some more freedom. We think he gets very lonely being by himself all day and we feel bad leaving him all alone. We have discussed getting a second dog to keep him company but are unsure if that's a good idea. We are actively TTC and wonder if a second dog would just add problems when we do finally conceive. So my question to current dog owners ... If you got a second dog did it really help keep the other one company? Or is it really just double the work? Thoughts on owning multiple dogs vs just one! My biggest problem is that we went to a local animal shelter over the weekend to donate food and fell in love with a dog there!

Re: Question for dog owners

  • I think it all depends on the age and demeanor of your current dog.  If he is older and/or more laid back, a new rambunctious puppy probably wouldn't go over so well.  That's just my experience.  All depends on the pups I think :)  GL!

  • Our current pup just turned 1 at the end of September and the one at the shelter is 1 1/2. They have the exact same demeanor , super friendly and very playful!
  • I wouldn't think it would be a problem then :)  The only problems I've ever really had with it being more or less difficult dealing with one vs. two is if they have completely different personalities.  Younger puppies tend to annoy older dogs... at least that's been my experience.

  • We thought about getting a second dog to keep ours company, but thought it would be kind of a crap shoot on whether it would be a good idea. Plus we still travel a lot so our costs would just double with two dogs, and we don't have any family member that would take our one giant, definitely not two.
For us we have just kept up the two walks a day to try to wear him out. I'm sure he gets bored but ours also has the backyard during the day. At almost 3 yrs old, I no longer worry about him during the day, but still feel a little guilty. If we had another puppy at this point, I think I would have regretted it.

  • We've seriously considered it, but at this point haven't done it. We just moved into our house a little over a month ago. We were in an apartment before and so it definitely wasn't an option while we were there. I think the biggest thing keeping us from getting a second now is the whole money thing. I also am afraid of making my dog feel like we love him less, but I doubt he'd feel that way. He is super friendly and loves other dogs, but I don't want him to feel replaced (haha I sound crazy...). I say go for it because I want a 2nd....haha
