Nestie dust - pretty please

H is looking for a new job today. He's been with this trucking company since January, but a new company took over in March.  Now the company is pulling drivers from their other stations and taking all the good runs.  H has been really good, taking runs others didn't want, working 6 days a week to make up for the loss money (or when they needed him), working 14 hour shifts on Saturday, etc.

During the summer, they told him he could have his week off when we got the kids, only to be denied the week before saying he didn't have enough time in the company to take off a full week.  They said they would "work with him" but they didn't.  Instead of little short runs, they put him on really long ones, that is possible to run out of time and be stuck over night.  It SUCKED.  We only get the kids 1 week in the summer!

He asked off for Thanksgiving months ago, since it's our holiday with the kids, he's been denied twice.  The second time after they said to put it in and they will work with him.  But then it changed because NO ONE can take off between Thanksgiving and Christmas. WTF.  I know they will be busy since they haul groceries, but to deny anyone from taking off.  Way to be family oriented.

This was the last straw... so he's going to his dream job today.  It's for hauling cars. Ports are closed holidays, and it'll be Mon-Fri, day shift.  After a year of civilian experience, they said they will take his Army experience (10 years).  I'm really crossing my fingers for him.  There's 2 other places he might check too.

Idea is to get a new job between now and next week, give his 2 weeks notice, peace out for Thanksgiving, start new job 2 Dec.

  • Good luck!!!! I hope it all works out!

That stinks about not getting time off around the holidays. DH got screwed over this year too...usually, if you work Thanksgiving, you get Christmas off (or vice versa). This year, 2 of the other Physician Assistants in the ER are out sick in Nov/Dec so he's stuck working Thanksgiving AND Christmas. I'm beyond pissed because that means we won't see our families at all for the holidays. Thank goodness this is his last year working in that ER....I've had enough with the ridiculous ER schedule!

  • Lots of good thoughts here. My DH had a great schedule at the bank because they are closed holidays, Sundays and evenings, but being someone who works a job that has a holiday and weekend commitment, I totally get the frustration. I'm working the Wednesday night shift into Thursday before thanksgiving and thanksgiving night this year...

  • I understand people need to work holidays, and it's a little harder because I do have a set schedule (M-F, 7-330, Fed holidays off).  I just feel like they aren't willing to work with him.  He's only called out sick once, and took 2 days off (Apr and Sept for his kid's birthdays).

I feel like he's got a special circumstance that they can work around, since his kids are 500 miles away, and we only get 1 holiday a year.

  • Sending good luck and good vibes y'alls way!! Especially if this other job is his dream job, I hope he gets it! I understand the need for people to work holidays, I've done it before in retail, but I think they should also be considerate of the circumstances, especially after the summer issue.

  • I will pray for your H.  Keep us posted!

I understand not having enough time to take a full week off, but not accommodating someone who gets their children for 1 week a summer?  Terrible!  And the not giving off for Thanksgiving is even worse.  How could a company be so heartless?
