Looking for a job

I am currently a stay at home mom in Montgomery County near the Montgomeryville Mall and looking for a full time job in the area.  I have my Bachelor of Arts in Human Services degree and would love to use it.  I am having a hard time finding places to apply to. I have applied anywhere and everywhere.  I am looking for some suggestions on more places to apply to.  I really need a job ASAP.   TIA!!

Re: Looking for a job

  • Did you try area group homes? In my area, they always need more staff, and it could be a foot in the door to a human services job.
  • Have you tried Linkedin, Glassdoor, Craigslist or other "non-traditional" ways?  Today more and more companies are using multiple venues to find people.  At my current employer, they get their HR personnel from the co-op/ intern system.  Other companies use other means.  Sometimes especially for HR you need a foot in the door then you can bid on open positions.
  • Or what about a staffing agency? A temp-to-hire position might be worth a shot. Also networking is so important these days.
  • I would avoid staffing agencies and websites like monster or career builder.  Last office job I got was from going door to door in an office park with my resume in hand.

How else do you find jobs if not career websites like career builder? And I've had great luck with staffing agencies, as long as you're in the position that you don't need benefits.
  • I'd second staffing agencies; I know a lot of people who have had temp jobs from agencies turn permanent. For seem reason, they are always jobs providing customer service for banks, which don't sound too bad if you're a people person.

you can go to the website of the company you want to work for and see if they have any positions open you can apply for.  That's the best luck I've had.  If you go on sites like career builder you are literally throwing your resume in a black hole.  I think I sent out 300 resumes on that website to get 1 call back.  People like to see you want to work for them.

  • Oh got it. I usually use Indeed.com, so I'm not sure if this is the same as the other websites, but typically when I open a job up, in order to apply it links you to the company's website and you go through the application process from there. But not always, so that's a good tip. Maybe the best use of the job websites is just to search/locate jobs, but then to be sure to apply directly from the company website.

And wowzers, that's a lot of resumes! How frustrating/discouraging.

  • I would agree with going directly to the company website application, even if you may have found the job or post through monster. Indeed did seem to be the better one back when I was looking.

I had bad experience with temp agencies too.  I came to work the first day on the first job they got me and the people that worked there said they didn't need me and the agency should have told me. The 2nd job I got from a totally different agency I lost at the end of the first week.  It was a reception position and the boss didn't think my voice was strong enough when I was answering the phone!  Thinking about all this makes me realize I'm so happy I left corporate america.

  • Thank you everyone so much! I do look on indeed, craigslist, monster and career builder.  I am not so sure about staffing agencies though. Also linked in, I will check glassdoor though!

I have not tried group homes, never thought of that! Do you know of any?
