What to do with 5,000 dollars!

I have 6,000 in savings right now. This is what I want to do:
1,000 for Christmas budget (3 kids) they are still young so I can make this work
5,000 on our car which will put us at owing only 1,000 on the car
OR! Putting the whole 6,000 on the car leaving us with only having a mortgage payment.
Now before everyone freak out my husband and I will both be getting 5,000 a month from now until July (VA benefits) that is why I feel like we should just pay off the car now and on the first of December we will have a savings of 5,000.

  • no I do not. I know I need one, but I just feel like....when I was younger I was 45,000 in debt. It took me 5 years to pay it off. And that was 5 years of rice and beans, and top ramin! No Lie! I just hate debt, it gives me anxiety! I just want to hurry up and get rid of it! But I know that you are right. I'll just keep that money in savings, and go with my original plan of plan of paying the car off in Jan. Jan is only a few months away. I'll live lol.
  • I would advise to keep the $6k in your savings, and apply next months' $5k toward the car debt.  According to my calculations you will be receiving about $40k over the next 8 months from VA benefits.  So I would apply the first $6k to pay off the car, then the rest to get to a 6 months E-fund (including your $6k already in savings).

If there's any money remaining after that, then I would put it into a savings account for the next car or something that may need replaced in the future.

  • I'm with @brij2006. I hate my debt too, but remember, the e fund could prevent debt down the line :)
  • I totally would put all the money in savings as well.  Our goal is to have 6k in our E Fund before we put more towards my school loan and other things as well. 1K seems like a lot of money to spend on xmas.

  • We spend at most roughly $500 on Christmas for everyone max.  A lot of years we can average around $400.  Depending on how old your children are, buying from second hand stores are fine.  Even when they are older, buying used working electronics saves a lot of money.  My SIL who is 11 got a portable MP3 player last year and a used 3-D DS unit.  Saved her parents a lot of money.

I would keep the 6k in the bank then use the next few months of VA benefits to pay off your debts and save for rainy days.

I also agree that $1,000 for christmas seems like a lot for children. Don't get me wrong - I come from a family who basically hoards semi-necessary things starting in September/October so that we have a lot of gifts under the tree (I'm talking clothes, shoes, household items that are wearing out, etc.).  But things we buy for the sake of being "extras" at Christmas never cost that much.  I spent a grand total of $50 on H this year, and he is getting several things.

I have a friend whose rule for her children at Christmas is, "Jesus got 3, you get 3."  Not what happens in my family, but it definitely makes you think...
