Being thankful on fb vent

Some of my friends are doing the daily status of something you are thankful for everyday in November. Last night someone said she was thankful that she got approved for unemployment. DH just talked to them over the weekend and had details of all this. She wasn't able to get it before b/c she couldn't work due to hurting her shoulder. She had surgery and was now cleared to work. But her and her DH decided that she should relax and collect unemployment for a while. This bothers me so much!!!

  • Wow, way to milk the system.

My mom called me once and was really happy that my sister's unemployment was extended. I didn't really respond until she asked if I was there. "Um, yea, but I'm not sure how you want me to respond. Yay I'm happy she's a lazy piece of crap that doesn't want to work?"

  • That's cool. Wish I could just kick it and relax on someone else's dime - especially after I was just out for however many months.

  • yeah. I hate this. I hate that our system lets people do this. its such crap.
  • And DH asked her H, doesn't she need proof of looking for a job, and he said not really. She can just call someplace 1x a week. Not sure if its true, but sounds like bs to me.

  • DH had to go on unemployment last year when he was laid off for a few weeks. The max you can collect in DE is $336 a week which is basically crap. Thank god we had money in savings.

You don't have to show proof of looking for enployment. When you go through the prompts each week it just asks if you were available to work. DH did however randomly get picked to go to I guess what was a skill building class that was once a week. He got called back to work before he had to go though.

It sucks that people milk the system when there are families out there that really need it, and even if they are collecting it honorably the amount it pays is basically what you would make on minimum wage.

This is a big reason we both wanted to work in PA- just in case. When H was laid off and on unemployment in DE it was such a joke. Luckily it was only for a few weeks.

My dad would always get denied in DE, he was a construction worker and would work in different states.  PA and MD were always easier.

He's now working in PA. This job has plenty of work, but it is still nice to know PA benefits are so much better than DE.

It's true. Unemployment is a huge joke. H collects when he's between jobs and all he does is takes 2 minutes to go through an automated system.

Right when I finally got a job, I had to show proof that I'd been looking for work. I had to struggle through all the people I'd verbally spoken with about jobs I never wanted. I never heard back from them, so I guess they accepted what I'd given them.

In relation to your post, @klm42404, I knew I was going to get laid off after I had surgery and my MIL asked me if I would consider asking to be laid off so I could apply before that & I told her absolutely not.
