Update Post RE Appointment

DH was able to go with me to the RE today. Which is good, as I was a nervous basket-case.

We sat down with my RE and went over what is next. Obviously, no more Clomid for me. He explained that the best option and most likely option for success at this point is moving on to injectables. However, they are a big step up and said there was another option of Letrozole (which is Femara apparently).

He said he has had some success with the Letrozol, but hasn't used it often. He explained that it is the route he thinks is easiest (and cheapest) right now.

So, we're going to go with the Letrozole for one cycle. If it doesn't make me ovulate, we'll move on. If it does, we'll give it 3-4 cycles before moving on to something else if we have no success.

He said he hopes the Letrozole works, but he has a suspicion that it won't and at that point we will move on to a combo of injects/trigger/IUI next.

So I'm still a bit nervous even though the appointment is over. I'm grateful to have a plan.

Question - I'm picking up my prescription for Provera and Letrozole tonight. Would you start the Provera tonight and just deal with the pathetic AF I usually get off it for 2-3 days of vacation so that we can just get on with the next steps? Or do you think wait til Monday when we go on vacation, start the Provera then and get AF when we get back? My RE said either way was okay with him.  I kind of just want to get this next ball rolling but AF on vacay isn't the greatest, but my AF on Provera is usually barely more then spotting anyway.

I am glad that you're DH was able to go with you and it sounds like you had a good appointment. I am glad he's willing to try the Femara before moving on. I really hope it works for you!

If you're RE says that it doesn't matter when you start the Provera, I would enjoy vacation and then do it. I am all about no AF on vacations (even though without fail she always shows up anyways).

ETA: Re-thinking it, it would depend on if AF would mess with your vacation plans?

  • I am so glad the appt went well!  Clomid didn't make me ovulate at all, but Femara did.  I really hope it works for you!

I would want to wait because AF on vacation is no fun, but like Amanda, I am impatient and would probably end up starting it right away.

Glad your appointment went well and that YH was able to be there with you! Sounds like you have a good plan, which must be a good feeling.

I'm too impatient to wait for most things; I want to get the ball rolling as soon as possible, so if AF on your vacation isn't going to bother you I say go for it.  But if she's going to be a PITA, enjoy your vacation and wait til you get home.

  • Happy to hear that you have the next steps and options in place.

If the AF/spotting wouldn't hinder your ST on vacation, then I would just start it now. Mine was always just spotting after Provera too, and it didn't hinder ST too much.

  • Sounds like your plan forward has been well discussed.  GL!

As for your question, if you start the Provera before vacation, would you be back by CD3?  I would think that your injects cycle should be monitored as normal starting with a CD3 baseline appointment.  If you'll be back in time then I'd probably start because like others, I'm impatient.  Otherwise, I'd wait so as not not miss out on a cycle.

I would be doing a Letrozole, not IUI so CD 3 I would just start taking the pills.

I THINK if I start Provera tonight CD1 would be between the 13-15, making CD 3 15-18 (we get back on the night of the 18th). If anything the dates would be later, not earlier.

I think I'm going to start the Provera tonight. Since we'll be in Disney, ST isn't going to be all that likely anyway since we'll be exhausted at the end of most days. I'll talk to DH tonight and see if he cares.

So your doctor doesn't do a baseline to make sure your hormone levels are where they should be or that there are no residual cysts from the previous cycle before starting meds each cycle?  I'd personally be concerned about this, but then again maybe my RE is different.

I guess in that case it wouldn't really matter when you started, other than what you're comfortable with.

I've done end of cycle bloodwork before starting the Provera every cycle. Not beginning. He mentioned that when we go on to injects he'd be bringing me in for all sorts of monitoring starting CD3, but nothing with the Letrozole.

  • I didn't have CD 3 blood work while on femara and we did three cycles of it. When I got my + opk I would go in for an ultrasound and our IUI was the next morning. Then he would have me do blood work 7 days after my + opk to verify my progesterone level. Betas to verify a + home pregnancy test. If/when my period showed I would start my 5 days of femara CD 3.

Everything is crossed for you that the Femara does the trick and you finally O! I'm also very glad your RE went ahead with trying it before going straight to the more intense and expensive injects.

As far as when to start taking Provera, talk to your H, see if he has any thoughts on it, and start it whenever you both decide. If AF isn't going to be an issue on vacation, I'd go ahead and start now. If it might, I'd wait.

It seems like I may be the odd one out, but I would probably just go for the Provera now. I wouldn't say I *want* AF on vacation, but especially if it's super light, it wouldn't ruin anything for me. That's what it comes down to though, is which will bother you more personally: AF on vacation or waiting an extra week to start?

    TTC #1 August 2014. BFP 9/26! EDD 6/9/15
    Baby A born 6/17/2015
  • Update: DH and I decided last night we want to just get the ball rolling and start the Provera.  We went to pick up the prescription and couldn't!

My insurance changed on the first and they haven't given us ID numbers yet, but we have coverage. Because they can't electronically submit the claim without my member number I can't pick up my prescription.  I am going to call the insurance company tonight and scream if they still don't have my ID.

So, basically now we have to wait and HOPEFULLY start the Provera before vacation.
