GTKY: Guns

This could also be a hot topic. How do you feel about guns in the home?

Re: GTKY: Guns

  • H and I don't have guns but we would like to. It is very personal. I grew up in a house with guns. I grew up in a pretty bad neighborhood (the kind where people are like... how did YOU turn out so good? Good parenting, people) and the only time we ever saw any gun, was if someone was causing trouble outside and my dad wanted to be safe. H and I took a shooting class and do go to the shooting range occasionally. It is very important to me to not be afraid of them.

If we did have them in our home, we both insist they would be locked up and out of reach of any little ones.

I respect both sides because I understand how frightening it can be.

  • I grew up with guns in our house. To be honest, I never knew they were there. Once I was old enough to understand what they were and that we had them, I was also old enough to understand that they were my dad's and we didn't dare touch anything that belonged to my dad without his permission.

We don't have any but I'm sure H will end up getting at least a hunting rifle. Anything he does get will be locked up.

  • H has a hunting rifle in a gun safe out in the garage. That's about a close to the house as I feel comfortable having it.  It was a compromise.  They just make me uneasy.

  • H and I both have guns mostly hunting rifles or shotguns but we do have a nice little collection of handguns going on now. We also have a safe that holds all of the guns. Just like @Amcourt09 we both grew up with guns in our house and we knew not to go near them they were dad's. I also learned safety and respect of them and we plan to teach that to Ethan once he gets old enough.
  • H has several. I'm not saying he's an enthusiast, but I told him he wasn't allowed to buy more until he bought me an engagement ring, and we were engaged 5 months later :-)
I kind of blame his Mom for his interest in guns. H was never allowed to have any toy guns as a child and he's making up for it now!

I did not grow up with them so they still make me a little uncomfortable. I have shot the ones we own and am getting slowly more comfortable. I'm also in the process of getting my own license just because it makes sense if God forbid anything ever happened to H.

H is very safe with them, they're all unloaded, individually locked and in a gun safe. When we have kids we plan to teach them to respect them from a young age.

  • I live in canada....handguns are illegal and I like it that way. My FIL hunts so he has some rifles but they are all under lock.
  • I really do not know I did not grow up around guns my family doesn't hunt. My FIL does and they have a big safe in there basement. I guess if they are locked up it is fine and so kids can not get it. But H & I do no own any guns and do not think we ever will.

  • My dad always had them and taught me how to shot, that being said I haven't done it in like 15 years. We don't have any but I wouldn't mind if you have one.
