Teachers (announcement related)

How did you announce to students and co-workers? Did you actually tell them you were/are expecting or just let them figure it out on their own as you started to show?

I am planning to tell my administrators before Thanksgiving since we are going to announce to the world then. But I don't know what to do about everyone else. I am a music teacher so I see about 500 kids a week or so. I am also in multiple buildings. I am sure that once a few people know the word will spread. I am friends with co-workers on Facebook so once we announce there I suppose some of them will know and the word might spread from there.

I am mostly not sure of how to handle it with the students. Should I just wait until they start noticing a difference? I am plus sized so it could be a while until they notice. Do I just ignore it altogether? WWYD?

Re: Teachers (announcement related)

  • I'm not a teacher, but I would announce instead of making people wonder afraid to ask. I probably would not make a formal annoucement to coworkers, but rather just tell people you are closer to at a point when you feel comfortable disclosing. If students don't find out through the grapevine I would probably wait to tell then until it was becoming apparent

  • With DS, I let a couple of CWs spread the word around 12 weeks. I was probably closer to 16-18 weeks before I told my class. I read them the book "My Teacher's Having a Baby" (I think that was the title) by Eve Bunting, and asked why would we read this book. They figured it out, and I answered questions after. Well, I didn't answer how babies are made questions (one kid asked, lol).

With LO2, I told a couple of CWs and swore them to secrecy since I wasn't 12 weeks until over the summer and I wasn't coming back, but I needed help hiding the no drinking at a couple of events.

  • I am also an elementary music teacher.  I started showing on the earlier side, given that I am also overweight.  I scheduled a meeting with my principal to tell her and since I'm new to the building, I just told the people I was close with and it gradually got out.  I haven't formally said anything to the kids but I'm sure the older ones have figured it out, even though they haven't said anything to me.

  • I'm not a teacher, but I do work in a school, so I hope you don't mind me butting in.

I told my supervisor right away, because I work with kids with severe behavioral difficulties and I frequently have to go hands on with them and I knew I wasn't allowed to do that pregnant. She didn't tell a soul until I told everyone else.

Everyone else found out during a meeting when they were going to put me with some very difficult clients that were super aggressive. I freaked out in the meeting and blurted it out.

My clients have JUST started figuring it out, a few of the older ones (high school age) ask me about it daily and want updates. The younger ones like to tell me to name the baby Batman.

  • With Cora, I told my admin and dept heads (I taught at two High schools) and just told people as I felt like it.

For my students, I had a picture of the ultrasound up on my computer and told them I had something to show them, so I turned my computer around.

This time, I will do the same as far as admins and my dept. head (now at one school).

Since I teach high school math, I am going to put together a puzzle for them. They have to solve equations, and they have a key that tells them which symbol each number is. Once they have their symbols in the correct order, I will give them a second key that will give them symbols to letters. This will spell out "Mrs. K is having a baby"

I need the in between step, because if they are given the letters, they will just try to scramble them around without doing the math.

  • @Whippet8, that is such a cool idea! I work with students K-5 so I don't know what I will do. I feel like it will be awkward since I am already plus sized and that people won't be comfortable asking. I was thinking about buying a shirt to wear around Christmas break...I found a cute one online that says, "Our Christmas present came early" with an arrow pointing to my stomach. I'm still undecided on that though. I also thought about getting an ultrasound picture or enlarging our announcement pic for Facebook and framing it for my desk. We'll see which route we go.

  • @teacherlady79, you are right about elementary kids. When I was pregnant with DS, this one boy in another class told me I was fat when we were all on the playground (he also has autism so zero social cues). When I told him that I wasn't fat but that I had a baby in my belly, it blew his mind. I was in the third tri and carried DS quite big (and I gained 50lbs but whatever). I still laugh about this story. His reaction was hilarious.
