PNR/UF Monthly Read: Stormwalker (SP)

So what did you guys think?

I had mixed reviews. I thought it was entertaining, but I wasn't in love with the story. All the pieces were there for me, but it just fell flat.

I liked the Mick/dragon thing, because I haven't encountered that in my UF/PNR reads yet. Not that they're not out there, but this was the first time I've read anything about dragons.

Janet bothered me. She reminded me a little too much of Eugenie from Stormborn, but I didn't like her as much as I liked Eugenie. Also, I don't think her character was properly developed. By the end of the book, I still had no idea who she was. This is stupid, but Janet's name bothered me. I kept thinking of Janice from the show Friends.

I'm going to take a minute to talk about Mick because as a character, I love him. But I don't like that there was no build up to the love interest. Speaking of building up to the love interest...the one who DOES fill that mysterious "I hate/lust you" role is Nash. But...if Janet is oh-so-in-love with Mick, where does that leave us with Nash? Unless her whole foursome dream is somehow going to be worked into the plot, I don't see why the author spent so much time developing him and the chemistry between Nash and Janet.

  • So what did you guys think?

I had mixed reviews. I thought it was entertaining, but I wasn't in love with the story. All the pieces were there for me, but it just fell flat.

I agree. I felt like she was a combination of Eugenie magic-wise and Mercy Thompson personality wise. I also kept forgetting her name and when someone would say "Janet" I had to figure out who they were talking to.

I did figure out that Mick was a dragon and found it kind of odd that she never thought he might be something like that with all of his fire magic.

The thing I didn't like most was that there was this whole build up to her NOT opening the door and she does it and afterwards everyone had changed their mind that doing it ONCE was not a bad thing. Also, I might be remembering incorrectly, but as a photographer, she didn't take any photos. She enjoyed the views, but there was never any internal dialog about what a great photo this would make, etc.

Had this not been the selected read, I probably wouldn't have picked it up on my own because I thought the cover was terrible.

What did you think about Amy's storyline? I thought it was sort of contrived that it was a crises of faith (even though she was possessed and all that) and still thought she made awful decisions.

My copy contained the first few chapters of the next one, which I went ahead and read, and convinced me to put the second on hold from the library. I think they are going to get better as the series progresses.

  • I liked it.  I was more intrigued by the Navajo powers than anything else.  I do love me a dragon though.  I can excuse the photography thing because she was focused on rehabbing and opening the hotel.  It was taking the majority of her effort and attention.

I agree. I thought book 2 sounded like it had more promise, but I wasn't sold enough to buy it. Maybe during my next lull.

  • You guys have hit most of my discussion points.  The book was OK.  I feel like it had a lot of promise, but it didn't really deliver.  Her name definitely shouldn't have been Janet.  It does not fit her personality or background in the slightest.

I liked that she refurbished the hotel.  I think this leaves it open for a lot of really great story lines with its guests.  I love the magic mirror, too.

I think I might be in the minority, but I did NOT like Mick.  As @nocturnalintimacy pointed out, there wasn't any build up.  The already had a relationship and just continued it.  I liked Nash's character so much more.  I want to get rid of Mick and see where Janet and Nash would end up.  Then there's Maya though. She'd just get the shaft again.

I kind of hated Amy. She was weak and gullible and selfish.  I realize that she had some supernatural stuff going on, but disappearing for the reasons she did leaving people to think she was dead was just too much.

  • We're going to be surprised with another daughter in the series, aren't we?  There was just too much about Goddess Mom prancing around and seducing men for there not to be another girl.

  • Oh absolutely, @RevJen There's going to be a war between Janet and a half sister at some point in the series.

You also sort of got your dragon, Rev!

  • Ugh. Amy annoyed me. You couldn't pick up a phone? Really?!

The thing with Maya is, that by the end of the book, I liked her character. Not enough that I didn't want to see some Janet/Nash action, but this would break some serious girlfriend rules.

Also....Mick/Janet history bothered me because Janet just ACCEPTED him and his disappearances and everything else. Really?! She comes across as tough but then she just lets this guy do whatever the hell he wants? It just didn't feel natural.

@RevJen Yes! I thought this too, but again Eugenie/Storm Born double take.

  • I'm pretty much in agreement with what has already been said.  The magic mirror was my favorite character hands down.   I also really enjoyed the dragon bit, but I really didn't like the relationship with Mick.  It just felt so strange to me as I was reading it.

Nash and Maya were the only characters that I found truly interesting.  I'm sure she's delaying getting to know Janet (and yes, her name did drive me nuts. Even Jan would have been better.  Is Begay a typical Navajo last name?)   for later in the series, but I feel like I don't know her enough to want to read the next book.

  • The magic mirror was hysterical.  I was, however, extremely annoyed that Mick had a portion of it put into the mirror on her bike.  It's precisely the sort of thing I hated about Twilight.

  • I don't like that Janet and Mick share the mirror at all.  It's one more thing to bind them together when I personally want them apart!

  • You guys are thorough!  Janet was an odd choice for her name, I agree that it didn't seem to fit at all.

I haven't read Stormborn, but I definitely saw similarities between Janet and Mercy.

I agree with all of this about the whole Mick/Janet/Nash thing too.  I know that Janet and Mick had a history because we were told that, but that is it.  I don't mind Mick, but I think some of that is because I really thought from the beginning that more would happen with Janet and Nash.

  • I don't think we know who Janet is because I don't think SHE knows who she is.  Does that make sense?  We're sort of figuring this out as she does.

Yes, but....watching characters mature is one of the things I LIKE about a UF/PNR series. It's good to see them grow and develop into the person they want to be. With Janet, I have no idea what she's thinking, or what she even wants. It was hard to root for her.

@Lauren620 Read Storm Born. Please. I want to chat about it with someone. I'll even reread it with you!

  • Eugenie is a BAMF.

  • I agree with most of you on this book. It just felt a little under developed overall. Janet (so shouldn't have been her name) was very Eugenie like.
The mirror was my absolute favourite character. I was not a huge Mick fan. I didn't like the lack of buildup but I did like that he was a dragon.
I'll probably read the second book eventually but not right away.
  • The dragon part should definitely be more developed in the next book.  Micks like, I love you, but I was sent here to kill you.  But really, I love you.  Oh snap! Dragons are here and want to kill you! Oh, wait, I convinced them you're cool, but I'm not sure for how long.

It's a disaster waiting to happen!

  • I agree the dragon storyline should be more developed.

I forgot to add that I also found it funny that she was a photographer who never took any pictures. It actually irritated me a bit.
