nbr - Tell me about your appliances

The house we bought came with a fridge (no freezer!) And a wall oven from the late 70's and ancient stove top. We need to replace all three since they don't seem to work very well and apparently mh and dog can't live without access to ice cubes in the kitchen.
We are planning on replacing the oven/ stove with a stand alone. What brand/ models do you have? Love it or hate it?
Also do you think it matters to mix brands in the kitchen? We don't care but were told we can't do that. (Three guesses who feels that way)
:/

Re: nbr - Tell me about your appliances

  • We have a GE gas range with middle griddle burner.  We love it, no complaints.  I wish we had bought it later because now they have a double oven model.
Our dishwasher is also GE, but our fridge is Samsung.
We went with what got good reviews and fit our budget over keeping the same brand.
I honestly wouldn't notice in anybody's house if they mixed brands.

  • @menrandes My exact words were that I had never noticed brands in other peoples kitchens.
  • Do you like your samsung fridge?

Oh yeah.  It has a flex zone pull out drawer above the freezer.   I think that's what they are called...
I like that a lot because I try to keep healthy stuff that would ordinarily be kind of hidden in the rest of the fridge in there.
The ice maker is a bit loud, but I've never known an ice maker to not be loud.
    No complaints!

  • There's a line down here by GE called the Artistry series.  It's exclusive to Lowe's and you can get 4 pieces for roughly $1200.  Maybe there's something like that up there.

  • I am dying to redo our kitchen. I love GE Profile appliances. Our old house had all GE Profile stuff and I miss it so much. Though if I were to do our kitchen today, I'd try to get a Thermidor stove. But that's just my fancy pants talking. Man, if I could do a chef's kitchen, I would die of happiness.

I hate glass top stoves; gas all the way for me.

  • My brother and I replaced our dishwashers around the same time with Maytag. Both of them had to be replaced within two years. I would not buy a Maytag dishwasher !

  • Good to know about Maytag dishwashers... mh promised me one years ago and I am still waiting on one.

We do have GE up here, I will check them out at Lowes.

We do have the Gas option here, but neither of us has had a gas stove before. I think it scares mh a bit, but I am intrigued by the idea.

I am going to a store tomorrow that sells Thermador, I had never heard of it before. I will look at those as well. We both like cooking/baking and want to get something really good but not overkill for price and size.

  • My house was built in 1970 and has a wall oven.  At the time I laughed and couldn't wait to get rid of it but now that I've gotten used to it, I love it so much more. When the time comes that I renovate my kitchen, I plan to upgrade to a double wall oven.

  • @fabk I love, love, love gas stoves.  I think they heat faster and more precisely.  My old stove had a "power boil" burner that could boil a pot of water in under 5 minutes.  It was amazing!

  • I wish I had this fridge: http://www.sears.com/samsung-26.0-cu-ft-bottom-freezer-refrigerator-stainless/p-04680833000P or one organized like it.  We have the freezer on the left/fridge on the right style and stuff never fits, especially when I buy stuff from Costco.  I love the drawer in the middle for stuff that gets used all the time.  I hate it when my kids stand in front of the open fridge looking for string cheese, yet never actually opening the cheese drawer.

My oven is a Samsung gas model, and while the stove is fantastic, I consistently add 5 or so minutes to everything being cooked in the oven.  I think maybe the temperature needs to be recalibrated.

  • @fabk - I always had an electric stove&oven growing up and everywhere I've lived that's what we had. When DH&I moved here, the house we rent has a gas stove&oven. I was annoyed at first because I've never used one and wasn't sure I would like it. I LOVE it now. I don't think I'd go back to electric. It took a bit to get used to using the oven for baking, but now I'm used to it and it's great.

  • I hate gas stoves.  Why?  The clean up.  An electric flat top stove is my dream.  It may actually stay clean because it's so much easier to wipe down.

  • We have Kitchen-Aid appliances.  I hate my fridge (it is a side by side and the water feature leaks).  I hate my ovens (they make a weird noise with the fan when they are turned on).  We had the ovens fixed once but the noise just came back suddenly.  My dishwasher door springs broke and we had to have that fixed.  Our microwave shorts out here and there.  The only appliances we haven't had trouble with yet are the Wine Fridge, Warming Draw and Stove top.

By the way our appliances were brand new when we built the house in 2005.

  • We are getting all new appliances next month, including swapping out our cooktop stove for a gas range, and I'M SO EXCITED!

I don't have any links and I forgot the brand though, so I'm no help whatsoever in this post.

@Menrandes Is this your fridge? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-28-0-cu-ft-french-door-refrigerator-stainless-steel/9790988.p?id=1218175547555&skuId=9790988

It's on super sale at Best Buy right now. @fabk

  • The house we bought has Kenmore appliances. A electric flat stop stove, which is okay, easy to clean but hard to regulate the temperature. The fridge has French doors and a bottom freezer. I thought that I would like the bottom freezer but it is kind difficult to keep it organized. That may just be me though. :\">

I would never notice if someone's appliances were all the same brand. I would, however, notice if the colors don't match. I wouldn't necessarily care, but I would notice it.

  • Don't worry about mixing brands or not; I think as long as they are the same colour/finish, you are good to go.  If you can, I highly recommend a gas stove.  You might find this website helpful: http://reviews.cnet.com/appliances/

  • In my professional opinion, GE Monogram are the best mid-range appliances. High price, I usually use Bosch dishwashers, SubZero refrigerators and Wolf cooktop/ovens.

However, I have Kenmore in my house (stove, micro and dishwasher) simply because we just needed something that day and couldn't order anything. Someday when we expand our kitchen I'll get more expensive appliances because I'm constantly cooking/baking.

And I do notice different brands, but that's just me :) I like it because it goes the whole kitchen together.. Same handle on the oven as the dishwasher, etc. that kind of thing.
