Lego storage?

As Jake is getting more & more into Legos, I feel like we need a better storage/organization system.  Right now, they're all crammed in a Lego tub, but we can't fit much more in there.  I was looking at this on amazon, does anyone have it or something similar?  is it sturdy?  Any other storage suggestions?

Also, I did a small rant about this on facebook the other day...but what is with all of the sets??  What happened to just buying 100 blocks and building?  (which is the other thing that I am concerned about with the whole organization thing...how do you keep all of the pieces in the right sets?)

Re: Lego storage?

  • We have an IKEA TROFAST storage set and one of the shallow drawers store EJ's lego sets.  All mixed together in one big mess of pieces. On occasion we go hunting through them to build one of the sets, but she really much prefers free-styling and making her own creations. I think we are on the edge of needing a second drawer for more lego (Which is fine... I will clear one out and get rid of stuff she doesn't use).  She still uses her Duplos too but we keep those in the bins they came in and up in her room.
  • My nephew is a Lego maniac, serious collector. He comes by it honestly because my brother was the same way.

My mom got him the Iris Lego Project Case Chest last year for Christmas

He also has several of the project cases (they sell them individually) and the mini figure ones for the small sets and I bought him one that is just for "guys". The kid is ridiculously anal and likes them all together along with the instructions. Plus his room is tiny and it needs to be organized since he lost his playroom to my BIL office. I have just started buying him a box when I buy him a set for his birthday/Christmas.

The container store also sells lego storage containers.

  • We have a big, clear, plastic bin with a snap on lid that used to hold Duplos and I'm about to dump all of the Legos in there. (Duplos don't get played with anymore.)

Usually the sets get built once and then dismantled to join the rest of the Lego or the sets stay together and are displayed. The latter is more for the Star Wars sets.

I'm probably going to get a small plastic bin with snap in lid for Lego people, wheels and other very special pieces. I also plan to find a small bin to put all of the directions in for the sets we've built.

All four people in our house love Lego, so it might be a Lego Christmas!

I briefly considered keeping all of the sets separated in ziplocks or something. Then I realized that the kids would NEVER maintain the system and the integration of sets would only make me crazy. Not worth it!

I found cute small plastic bins with snap on lids at the dollar store (probably 4X3) with cute designs that I thought would be perfect for individual small sets(Brinley is getting a few for Christmas).  And then I came to your realization above, that the only one who would be concerned with them being in the right bins would be me and I abandoned ship :-)

  • My boys love legos, but like to build the sets and then use them for imaginative play.  We bought open top canvas bins at Bed Bath and Beyond and put the assembled, or partially assembled pieces in these (Police things in one, fire station and related trucks in another, the garage and cars in another...).  I need to get out the directions to help with repairs and rebuilds, so it is easier to keep them built for a while.  We use a multi drawer tackle box for the mini figures and the really tiny parts and a few ikeas storage bins with lids for the pieces that aren't part of a set. somedays I feel like I really do live in "San Di-lego" which is what my 6 year old named his Lego city.  I do have one of the boxes similar to the original post above, we use it for the duplos and it works well.  it is the one that folds open and unzips into a street scene, so they like to play on it as well.
