Philadelphia area

Don't we have a couple people from the Philly area??  DH and I are thinking about visiting one of his friends later in December.  He lives outside of Philly (Coatesville to be exact I believe).  What is there to do around the area??  Any must dos??   I know we'll go to NYC for at least a day.  I would love to spend two days there and stay in a hotel outside the city - any tips on hotels outside of NYC?  Reason for not staying in NYC, is I'm sure the hotels are super expensive.  Plus, if we go when we're planning right now, we'd be in Philly 12/28 - 1/2, so with New Years Eve, I'm sure the hotels are outrageously expensive!

What kind of stuff do you guys like to do? There's not much in Coatesville. There's plenty in Philly though... Art Museum, Franklin Institute, Penn's Landing, South Street, Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross House, Constitution Center... that's all the obvious touristy stuff I can think of.

I've heard the Mutter Museum is really cool but you probably have to be into weird stuff to go there. Reading Terminal Market has good food. My friends like to go to the beer garden Frankford Hall if you are looking for a place to hang out and drink.

I probably just said all the things that you can find from searching TripAdvisor. I lived outside Philly for about 5 years. I wish I had gone into the city more often.
  • New Years Day is the Mummers parade in Philadelphia. It's so much fun - basically a bunch of old men wearing sequins and feathers and the most elaborate costumes (all handmade) and it's just a giant parade through downtown Philadelphia. Everyone is drinking and having an awesome time - if you're in the area, I wouldn't miss it! We went a few years ago, and I want to go again!

Everything quirky said is good too -- the Franklin Institute is awesome (but I'm also a total nerd, so maybe that's why I love it so much), and the Liberty Bell is pretty awesome too. If your DH is a Rocky fan, you should run up and down the steps of the Art Museum for sure!

Reading Terminal Market is really cool - even if you aren't hungry, you should at least check it out and walk around.
And also, eat lots and lots of Cheesesteaks. I'm a Geno's girl, but I've heard Pats is good too.

I don't live in Philly, but my whole family is up there so we're up there visiting a lot. Hope you have a great time!
