Talk to me about nursing accessories, baby ointments, creams...

I am slightly overwhelmed in the world of nursing pads, creams, etc.  What did you find to be necessary?  What did you find to be superfluous?  I am hoping to BF so long as my milk comes in.  Also, what do you ladies recommend brand wise for diaper creams, etc?

Nursing Pads: Must have for me. I EBF and leak a lot. Get a brand that contours the breast, like Johnson's.

As far as everything else, here's what I use:

    Palmers Stretch Mark Cream
    A&D Ointment (for diaper rashes)
Target Brand Lotion (for after baby's bath, mainly for LOs feet because they get dry)

I would also recommend having panti liners and pads at home, as well as wipes for you. It cleans better, and feels better, than toilet paper once you can actually wipe.

ETA: I bought nipple cream but didn't use it. It's probably a good thing to have on hand, but you can always go get it later.

Also, invest in at least two nursing tanks. They are the only thing I wore until my milk settled and I got a nursing bra, and I still wear them at night because it's easy.

  • I did not like nursing tanks but I did love my Bravado Body Silk nursing bras. I used nipple cream early on. I preferred Earth Mama Angel Baby brand. I prefer washable nursing pads to disposable ones. I like the My breast friend pillow over the Boppy. Nursing Mothers Companion book was really helpful. I still use my nursing cover. I used nipple shields early on but I would only get those if you need them.

  • For diaper cream we had really good success with Triple paste but I've heard lots of recommendations for Calmoseptine which is OTC but behind the counter. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000GOVYE6/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?pc_redir=C

  • Oh and aquaphor for skin irritations or rashes.

  • I use lansinoh breast pads. I have lanolin that I use sometimes, but mostly prefer motherlove. I still live in nursing tanks and yoga pants at home. For baby I use desitin for prevention, and a&d if he looks red. J&j lotion, and aquaphor on his eczema.

  • I had all kinds of BF'ing items but wasn't able to BF so it all went to waste.

Diaper cream- love Weleda!!! It's been fantastic on her tushy.
Baby lotion- I love California Baby's Everyday Lotion in calming. Her cheeks get irritated sometimes too and Episcencial's soothing cream has been the best of everything I've tried.
I also had an overwhelming amount of bathwash and have loved California Baby the best after the J & J chemical scare. I realize we all used it and are still here but I'm choosing to use more "crunchy" type items.

  • I hardly ever leak so rarely ever used pads.  When I do I use Lansinoh disposable pads.  Also I think lanolin is a must in the beginning.  I also prefer My brestfriend over the boppy for nursing and love my bebe au lait hooter hider nursing cover.

As far as baby, it may be best to hold off on lotions and creams to see if they're needed and what works for your baby may be trial and error.  I know a lot of people recommend butt paste for diaper rash but we never had luck with it.  Desitin max worked best for us.  And Zack has a bit of eczema and we've found Aveeno baby eczema cream to be working thus far.

  • Nursing pads are just preference as far as what brand. I used Medela and they were fine, but I would have liked something less stiff. I barely leaked at all after the first few weeks though, so I didn't use them much.

Lanolin is the same. I don't think a brand totally matters. I used lansinoh, because that is what I decided to register for, and that is what I got.

Diaper creams, Triple Paste seems to be one of the best for really nasty rashes, but Desitin blue or purple containers are really good too.

We just use Johnson's lotions and wash, but if you are having a shower, I'm sure you will get a ton of different things. We just bought our first bottle of wash at 14 months old.

We love aquaphor for her face or body when she has really dry skin.

  • Nursing pads are a must!  G is almost 6 months, and I still leak sometimes.  I like the Tommee Tippee brand, but it's all personal preference.  I haven't found a washable/reuseable kind that doesn't show through my tops yet.

I have a few nursing tanks from Motherhood which I find very helpful to wear under sweaters, etc, so that my belly doesn't show when I BF in public.

Lanolin for the ta tas is awesome.  G's pedi also prescribed some Jack Newman's nipple ointment since I had some minor thrush issues in the beginning.

    I still haven't found a nursing bra I like.

Aquaphor is amazing.  Get a lot of it.  I also have California Baby diaper rash cream that I use with our CDs.  Seems to work well.

  • Oh yeah, I forgot about nursing covers.  I have a bebe au lait which I like, but G isn't really a fan.  I just don't think he's used to it since we don't use it that often.  I have a boppy, but I found regular pillows more helpful.

  • Nursing pads are a must, cheap store brands worked fine

I didn't really use the lanolin but I would have a tube on hand just in case. I found the things you put in the fridge and then put them on your nips to be a lot more useful.

I hated the boppy and preferred a regular pillow on the couch. I had a nursing cami made by bravado ( http://www.bravadodesigns.com/mobile/the-essential-nursing-tank ) that I loved. I hear a lot of larger chested women suggesting bravado bras as being supportive and I (36DD/DDD) found the built in bra in the tank to be very supportive!

As for diaper cream we love triple paste if using sposies and CJs BUTTer cream for cloth.

  • Lansinoh pads and Lansinoh nipple cream is the best, I love Boudreauxs Butt paste, too.

  • Lansinoh pads worked best for me. I hated the Medela ones because they only had one sticky session and wouldn't stay in my bra. I have only used lanolin once, but I have the Lansinoh brand. Having a nursing pillow on each floor of our house has been wonderful. I have the Boppy nursing cover and it works well enough for me.

I don't know if you're planning on CDing, but if so you'll need to be sure you use something that's CD-safe. We use California Baby Diaper Cream and when we're in sposies we use A&D.
