Elective U/S

I want to get an elective U/S done for gender determination. I want to do this because we are waiting until January when I have insurance to do the anatomy scan. But I really want to know the gender before Christmas! There is a place here that does it for around $70-$80 and start as early as 16 weeks. Would you go at 16 weeks or would you wait until later like 18 weeks?

I would go later. We went at 17 weeks and got false results, even though I know this isn't the norm.

How far along will you be in January when insurance kicks in? I would wait to at least 19 weeks but preferably 20 weeks to get an US for the sole purpose of gender determination. Even though, we had a preliminary determination at 16 weeks, I didn't buy one thing because of the chance it would change. There were many girls on my BMB and 2nd tri who had conflicting results (lb is not the only one!).

One other thought-since you would be paying - there is a big difference between what the baby will look like and be doing during a 16 week US and a 20 week. You will get much better pics at 20 weeks and it will just be cuter!

I will be 21 weeks on January 1st. That is a good point about getting better pictures later on. I will be 20 weeks the week of Christmas!

I would push it later if you can even doing it the week of Christmas. You want to get the most accurate results and the best pics of LO

I would do it the week of Christmas, or the week before at the earliest. The ladies are right though, if you're right on money, it'd be better to save the elective scan for closer to 30 weeks so you can get a good pic of LOs face.

Or maybe you could ask for it as a Christmas gift? Lol

I would wait until 18! I had my US yesterday at 16 weeks (not elective but rather high risk) and they guessed that it is LIKELY a girl but not 100% confirmed! I have my US in two weeks with my OBGYN when I'll get it confirmed.

I would wait until 18+ weeks. We had our AS done at 18.5 weeks and it was right.

I paid for an elective ultrasound at 16w5d because we had a wedding to attend out of town and wanted to know before going out of town. The tech saw it was a girl, he said he was 100% sure and he was 100% right.

I didn't get great pictures but I got what I wanted and that was to find out the sex.

This is what I am debating on. My main goal is to find out the sex. So then I am just debating on if I should go ahead and do it or do an elective later to get some good pics.

Honestly I did it because I really wanted to know the sex. I didn't really care about getting good pics. If your DH is on the same page as you I would do it. I paid $140 for a gender determination ultrasound and for $70 that's a heck of a deal and I would totally do it.

$70 is a good deal. I paid $100 for a 3D elective. Actually my ILs and parents paid for it. I brought them along on Father's Day so they could all see their granddaughter live on ultrasound. It was a great experience.
