not sure what my next move is

Hi all,
Does anyone feel like they have no idea what they are doing career-wise? I've been in the science field as a lab assitant for quite some time. I feel like I should be moving up but I have no interest in management of others, which seems to be the next logical step. Anyone else in the same boat?

Re: not sure what my next move is

  • If you are happy with your current job, coworkers, work/life balance, pay and benefits than stay there. Just because people talk and talk about moving up doesn't make it all that it's cracked up to be all the time.

If you want more pay, you will either need to look at management or move to a new field that you can make more money at the same level at which you are currently.

Also, management is like a key. If you have some management experience, you are more likely to open the door to be hired elsewhere or in another field (even if it is unrelated) later on. Just some food for thought.

This. But I don't agree with the second paragraph of what was said. Unless you're in a rigid corporate job that sticks to position salary caps, I think that many companies afford you the ability to make more money in the same position as you gain more experience and tenure.

It really comes down to the tasks/activities that you want to be doing day to day. Are you doing them now? Where would you be able to do them? Are there any co-workers or employees at your company with non-management jobs that you find interesting that you might be able to "interview"? That's a great way to figure out how to get from Point A to Point B.
