Veterans Day/Remembrance Day

Today is Remembrance Day in Canada. It's a rather big deal.  Some provinces mark it as a holiday, others do not. We have the day off as federal government employees. DH is marching and participating in military ceremonies all day. I'll be heading to the National War Memorial for the ceremony.

Do you recognize Veterans Day, or is Memorial Day a bigger "occasion" in the US?

We also wear poppies in the 2 weeks-ish leading up to Remembrance Day. Everyone wears them - like I side-eye you if you don't.

There's your Canadian history lesson for the day. :)

Re: Veterans Day/Remembrance Day

  • To me, it seems like Memorial Day is a bigger deal but I don't think for the right reasons. It seems like Memorial Day is just a "kick-off to summer" day...plus a lot of people get the day off for Memorial Day. Veteran's Day was a big deal right after 9/11 happened but it seems like it is fading into the background. That's just my opinion on it all though.

  • I think Memorial Day is a bigger deal in the States, too. We have a ceremony at the school that's a pretty big occasion.

As sad as it is, I find that most people use Veteran's Day to kickstart their holiday shopping.

I think it's sad to hear that Veterans Day is not a big deal where PPs live. Maybe it's because of where I live as well, but it's (rightly) a huge deal here. I live in a military community and work at a military base, so I see things differently I guess.

We've attended Welcome Home events for the troops at the airport before throughout the year. Today will probably be the second largest crowd all year, second to Christmas Eve/Day.

ETA:  The poppies are a big deal for Memorial Day in the US, not Veterans Day.

I totally agree with this. I don't even know about any events going on in my town. There are always a few signs around town about Memorial Day and 4th of July parades, but I haven't seen anything about today.

  • Most people that I know put a FB status up thanking the veterans and then go on with their daily whining.

I don't usually post a FB status but I always call and/or text the veterans in my life to say thanks.

  • Memorial Day definitely gets far more attention here. Most companies are closed (unless you're in retail, ugh). But we're open today and I'm sure most other places are as well. I think both days are important, so it's sad they don't get the same acknowledgement.

Thanks for the Canadian lesson, nfp! I never knew there was a similar day there, or that you wore anything to note it. I really like that idea!

  • There are a lot of flags out in church lawns and in personal lawns today, and my DH is off since it is a state holiday.  I do think Memorial Day is more recognized nationally here.  I would imagine church services yesterday focused on veterans as well.

We got an email from our CEO thanking the veterans that work at our company.  That's about all I've seen.

Do we have any active or former military members on this board?  Raise your hand if you are/were.

  • I too think Memorial Day is more recognized here. However, I live in a military community, so there are events surrounding Veteran's Day (parades, etc.).

  • I feel like most of our community honors Veterans Day more, but my school district thinks it is a great time to do conferences-because nothing says thank you for your sacrifice to our teachers who served than an extended work day. The really sad thing is that our superintendent is a vet and didn't think through the planning of the day. My town puts out flags for Memorial Day, July 4th, flag day and Veterans Day. This morning I thought they were taking them down from having had the parade over the weekend but they did keep them out throughout most of the daylight hours,
