What are some traditions you have for Christmas?
I'm young and have been living overseas (Asia) for a few years now. The only thing I really miss about my hometown is Christmas. I want to make some traditions with my boyfriend but I'm not sure where to start.
I mean, I guess I should start with a tree, but I don't want a plastic one and real ones aren't sold here.
I would really like something to 'do' with my boyfriend that doesn't involve spending a lot of money.
Re: Christmas traditions
-We bought a large, plain fabric tablecloth to use only for Christmas and we also bought some fabric markers. Each year whoever is there for dinner we all write a sentence or two about what we're grateful for, or a special memory from the past year. We make sure to include the place and year as well. We started doing this when we lived in Brazil and it's sort of cool to see who we were with on Christmas and where we were.
-When I was young it was usually just my mom and me, so on Christmas day we'd go to the movie theatre and watch a good movie. It was a rare treat for us to be able to afford it, and I loved it.
-You could go caroling (not sure how common that is in China, if at all) or H's family always went ice skating on Christmas Eve.
-One thing I got from my mom was that each year we each get a new "special" ornament that depicted the things we were into that past year. I love going to her house and looking at all the ones from my childhood and seeing how our interests all changed.
-You could also maybe start a tradition with food. H's family always made tamales for holiday meals and that's something that we've carried on. We had to tweak them a bit so that I could also eat them (his family usually made pork tamales, but I'm a vegan so we got creative with our fillings). It's a long process to make tamales, but I know H looks forward to making and cooking them. You could think about what your favorite food is and try that. Or you can do what my friend's family does--each Christmas they try something new that they've never had before. I think last year it was Spanish Tapas, and before that Sushi.
-I can't offer too much help on the Christmas tree thing, but do they sell live Rosemary plants? they can be pruned to sort of look like a miniature Christmas tree, they smell good and I think are just generally nice to have.
Best of luck. I hope you enjoy the holiday season!
