Diet Resources?

I'm sure this info has been posted in part or whole before, but I'm on mobile and have no idea how much of a pain search might be.

Does anyone have some good links or info to share on food during pregnancy? I know some of the definite no nos (sushi, lunch meats, alcohol), but would love more good resourcea for foods to avoid and what's especially good. I want to get off to a good start since I've got a few weeks before my first doc's appt.

Thanks ladies!!

Re: Diet Resources?

  • Every doctor is different.  This is what I didn't eat:
    1. Lunch Meats
    2. Caffeine, including coffee, soda, iced tea, etc. (1st trimester than 1 small cup a day)
    3. Sushi
    4. High mercury fish
    5. Unpasteurized or soft cheese (brie, mozz, etc.)
    6. Alcohol

I stopped using my face wash because it has salycic acid.  I stopped using whitening toothpaste.

I added 2 Tums a day for calcium and continued my prenatals. I drank a ton of water.

Hmmmm, I can remember anything else for now for the 1st tri.

  • We took a Bradley Method class, and they recommended the Brewer/Bradley Diet http://www.bradleybirth.com/diet.aspx

It's a lot of food, but it's all healthy.  They recommend high protein, good fats, and lots of dark greens.

I definitely ate lunch meat, sushi, had caffeine, etc, but I know not everyone is comfortable with that.  I limited my intake, but I indulged.

  • Everything pink said. As far as what's good, It's the same as when you're not pregnant. Fruits, veggies, whole grains, protein and calcium... If you can stand it. Honestly I just ate whatever I could stomach when I was in my first tri.

  • I've gone half-caff with my coffee. I'll probably either go full decaf or to some sort of tea once these packages are gone.

I totally forgot to add a calcium supplement! Definitely will do that.

Thanks for link @botanicalbliss. I will definitely look into it.

I did decaf for two days and I'll say this: decaf is dupid. Yeah. That's right. I bought some half and half and just won't drink more than a cup.

  • I talked to my doctors about what they recommended, because most stuff I had read on the Bump they looked at me like I was crazy.

With my first pregnancy, I didn't eat:
    caf. coffee
    raw meat or fish
    soft cheeses
    lunch meat
    alcohol

This pregnancy, I'm only not having alcohol and raw meat or fish. Soft cheeses like brie and the like are fine if they are pasteurized, which if they are made in the USA, they are. I don't worry about it. I also can not stomach decaf coffee this pregnancy, so I have one cup of regular, and make sure I drink enough water during the day.

  • I have been reading "What to Expect Eating Well When You're Expecting" and that's been really helpful. The nurse yesterday gave me a big list of things that I couldn't eat...mainly the things that PPs have mentioned and also she said to stay away from artificial sweeteners like aspartame.

  • I worry more about what I ate than what I didn't eat. I tried to eat a lot of protein, healthy fat and fiber, along with drinking a lot of water.

I did drink coffee (although I cut back) and soda and ate limited amounts of deli meat and soft cheeses.

Verdict is still out, but I think B is pretty perfect.

  • Yeah, I'm having a hard time giving up my coffee. I do certainly drink plenty of water throughout the day though. I keep a big bottle on my desk at work and refill it a few times.

I'm not a big deli meats person to begin with, so that's nbd to avoid. And I avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague!!

I knew I'd have to give up sushi, and THAT's gonna be hard! I'll have to do what my sister did: get DH to bring me some in the hospital right after the birth! Haha!

Eating enough protein, good fats, and fiber is going to be a challenge. I know I eat more carbs than anything, but hopefully I'll be able to find a few staples I can rely on for the most part (love whole wheat bread, tuna or chicken salad, avocado, most nuts, eggs, pasta, etc).

Crap...just had a thought. Does no raw meat include no steaks that haven't been done to well?? I waaaaay prefer my steaks medium with plenty of dark pink. Am I going to have to eat them all cooked to shoe leather!?

  • My previous OB said to avoid alcohol and fish with high levels of mercury (and raw fish, obviously). That's it. I have since switched practices but haven't asked because I was 24 weeks when I switched.

This time I have tried to focus on eating healthy, as I gained 50 lbs with DS and I'd like to avoid that this time. By my home scale, I've gained about 25 at 30 weeks, so I'm pretty stoked about that.

I think DS turned out ok and he's developing normally, so I think this one will too. Although this one is a maniac in there and assaults me on a daily basis, so....

  • I've been trying not to do too much reading because I don't want to get bogged down with three million opinions and I don't want to get neurotic.  So far, I've cut out sushi (hard for me too!), deli meat (which I ate almost every day), caffeine, and alcohol (obviously). I'm not a coffee drinker but I had a cup of tea every morning and decided, although it was probably OK, I'm fine without it. I will say that decaf coffee, while lower in caffeine, can also have a lot of unnecessary chemicals added to it during the decaffeinating process, so you might want to look into that.

I eat a paleo diet, so I already eat a lot of fruits, veggies, healthy fat, and protein.  The challenge for me is finding simple, easy to take to work breakfasts and lunches. I just had a Lara Bar for breakfast, which is great for now, but probably won't be substantial enough for long. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any!

  • P, I'd recommend oatmeal, but if you do Paleo that's obviously out! I'm definitely planning on doing lots of instant oatmeal I can make at work with frozen fruits I can mix in (mostly of the berry variety).

Maybe look up some sort of egg cup you can make a bunch of ahead of time and then bring with and nuke at work? I seem to recall my friend (who does mostly paleo) making something like this before.

I just said to DH yesterday how easy oatmeal would be!

The egg cups were a definite option before the thought of eggs made me gag lol.

I'm thinking of trying some plain Greek yogurt (which is actually not paleo, but it's primal so I'm okay with it) with some fruit mixed in. I have an awesome recipe for pancakes that I can freeze, nuke, and throw some sun butter on, but I've been too lazy.  They're only easy to grab and go if you put in the work ahead of time lol.

  • I make overnight oats with oatmeal, Greek yogurt for protein and almond milk. Stick it in the fridge overnight with frozen berries. Grab it in the morning and top with chocolate chips. It is delicious, packed with lots of nutritional value. And if you bf, oats are good for supply, so you'll already be in the habit of eating it.

  • @Mrads, that sounds fantastic!! Can you give me amounts of each ingredient (ratios of oats to yogurt to milk)?

  • re: caffeine. I drink a cup of coffee every morning and sometimes a soda (caffeine has been a big craving of mine) and tons of chocolate. I used to drink decaf but I read that it's actually worst and that was all the reason I needed to switch back to regular. I always follow up my cup with water. I remember reading that women were avoiding it so their babies wouldn't be too wired when they were born. yeah right. I had little to no caffeine with my daughter and she's a freakin' spark plug.

as another PP said, you might just have to eat what you can 1s tri. if bagels and carbs are the only thing you can handle, then that's your diet at the beginning.

Yeah, I definitely don't want to be sucking down a bunch of chemicals in place of caffeine. I know to limit myself to approximately 1 cup of regular coffee per day, and since I really only drink it in the morning, that's fine. I don't drink soda often at all.

So far so good on food. I haven't had anything turning me off and m/s is nonexistent right now. Of course, I've got 7 1/2 more weeks in the 1st tri, so god only knows what could happen in that time! Keeping my FX for a solid stomach!
