AW: I just signed up for a half marathon

I'm fairly atheltic, but a pretty crappy runner. My brother talked me into doing a half in June with him. I'm completely terrified but I have plenty of time to train and get ready. It's time to face my fears!

I know there are some other distance runners here. Any tips?

  • Woohoo!! You will do amazing!

My biggest tip is to get good running shoes from the start.  Go to a specialty running shoe store (that only sells stuff for runners, ask your brother about one), and get fitted for some.  They will make a world of difference.

Also to remember that for your first half marathon you are in it to compLete it.  Not compete.  So just have a goal of finishing.

Good luck!  If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. I'm no pro, but I've done 2, and am planning to do another one in April.

  • Thanks @brij2006!

I got fitted for running shoes before I did my sprint triathlons but that was a while ago so I will plan on doing it again sometime soon. I just want to finish! Even if it's at turtle speed.

  • My friend just signed up for and completed her very first half marathon earlier this year. I think she had the same/similar training timeline you do.

She found a running group training for it, and would go on runs with them I think once a week. I'm sure training in a group with both others who've done it before and those just starting out would be very helpful in learning your pace and rhythm.

GL!! I'm sure you'll do fantastic!

  • Oooh, we may have to have a chat time soon.  I've been considering training for a tri to mix things up, but I know I would need to start with a sprint one. Is there a certain training schedule you stuck to?

  • @brij2006 I followed the training plans in the books "Your First Triathlon" as well as "Triathlons for Women." I'm about to post and run but am happy to talk more specifics later. I was getting pretty into it and then my life starting resolving around pg/loss. Now it's time to do something athletic again.

Ironically, the reason I did sprint tris was so I wouldn't have to run more than 3 miles.

  • Haha and now you will be doing 13.1.  :-)

I will definitely check out that book.  It's the swimming part that I just can't get past.  I can swim, but it isn't pretty.

  • Cool! I want to do a race someday. Good luck with your training!! I agree with brij on the running sneakers. They'll make a huge difference!! FWIW I'm a fan of Brooks and have been buying them for a few years now.

  • I agree with brij on the shoes; they are the only thing you really need for running. Everything else is just icing.

I also found running with a group very helpful, especially on the long runs.

    Good luck!  You'll do great.

  • Good luck!  I've done 3 (2 of which were not pretty at all and my best time is still much slower than most runners), and I've got to agree with most everyone: shoes, shoes, shoes!

I'm also a big stickler of stretching to reduce injuries and soreness.  And just keep pushing to the finish; It doesn't matter how slow you're going, you're still getting closer to the finish line!

  • Ohhhhh.....if you are looking for motivation and training tools for your half marathon, my BIL has a fitness podcast - it initially was designed specifically for runners, but I know he's branched out into other areas of fitness (such as spin classes, etc). There are a few episodes for marathon training though....and others have different bpms based on the kind of workout you want.

It's called Motion Traxx, and you can find it on iTunes (and it's free).
