CPW: birth choices

edited November 2013 in GP Moms
Where did you decide to give birth and why? (Or if you didn't have a choice pick that)

Re: CPW: birth choices

  • I was supposed to give birth in the birth center, but my bp got too high. Our birth center is connected to the hospital so I just waddled on down the hall.

  • I'm definitely having mine in the hospital. In a more ideal world (meaning if I was in perfect health and at a perfect weight), I'd honestly consider a home birth or water birth but I'd much rather be on the safe side.

  • I wanted to have a home birth, but I didn't connect with the home birth midwives well.  Plus, they didn't do the NT scan and A/S, and I wanted to make sure things were OK.  So, I went with the midwife group at the hospital.  I probably would have had to be transferred to the hospital if I had a home birth because of the way things went, so I'm glad I was already there.

  • Didn't give birth yet, obviously, but I just plan to stick with my OBG practice and deliver at the hospital they're affiliated with for deliveries.

  • I wanted to have my baby at a hospital from the start. As it turned out, I wouldn't have had a choice - DS was breech and so I had to have a c/s.

I wanted a hospital because you never know when you might need NICU and I wanted to have one for DS if he needed it.

  • I had my son med-free in hospital with a midwife as planned, but it was very quick. Birth centre wasn't an option at the time. After doing a critical analysis of home birth safety in my province for grad school, my intention is to stay home next time with hospital 5 min away if transfer is needed.

  • I had zero desire to deliver anywhere but a hospital. I liked knowing that anything we could need was there. I will be delivering at the same hospital this time as well.

  • I had Ava Nichol at the hospital. I had no desire to have her anywhere else but it wasn't really an option anyway so that worked out. I just need to know that if something went wrong all my resources would be available immediately. We lived 45 minutes from the nearest hospital and I don't even know where the nearest midwife is never mind a birthing center.

  • Both of mine were born at the hospital's birth center.  The rooms had tubs and I delivered and stayed in the same room my entire stay with baby never leaving.  I also had the med free births I wanted without feeling pressured into anything, but still had all the hospital resources right there, including a level III NICU, if it had been necessary

  • I didn't know there were birth centers within hospitals. I don't know if we have anything like that here, but that would be awesome @bobcee!

  • If a birth center with my midwife was an option, I would go for that.

Right now, my options are home or the hospital. I do NOT want a home birth, so the hospital it is.
I am having a midwife so hopefully I can have as much of a natural birth as possible/I can handle.

  • I delivered at the birth center at the hospital my doctors were affiliated with. I had a great experience. I really liked their policies.

  • @dangermuffin33 - I think a lot of hospitals are actually starting to lean this way - at least where we are. I know at least rooming in seems to be pretty standard. Not sure about the amenities in the rooms and actually delivering in the same room you'll be staying in though. But I was very happy with the set up.

Yes. My hospital was that way. A birth center in a hospital. I don't think there are any old fashioned ones around here any more.

We had one room for DS and me. When I had the c/s they wheeled me from my room to the OR and then back to my room. DS was with us the whole time.

The only time the seperate you is if LO has to go to the "nursery" which is the NICU.

  • I gave birth at the hospital my midwife was affiliated with. My midwife works across the street from the hospital. When I was put on pitocin, I went from a 3 to a 10 in 2 hours. My midwife was with a patient when she got the call to come over. She ran right over and delivered.

I will do the same with the next one. I'm just sad that my midwife switched offices and she isn't in my general area anymore.

  • I'm going with a hospital.  The countless "what-ifs" of pregnancy, labor, and delivery are my reasoning.  I plan to go med-free and my OBs support that.

  • Based on the above description of a birth centre, my hospital is very similar. It has a birthing wing separate from the reg hospital with huge rooms for labour, delivery and the stay after. The rooms have huge tubs and private bathrooms. We have a birth centre opening in town now that is totally separate from the hospitals so that's why I said I delivered in hospital.
