Julianne Hough as crazy eyes...

Please don't flame me as I'm genuinely asking this as a curious question…

why do African American's find it offensive when a white person wears a 'blackface'?  (i'm not on a side…just asking)

i can see if the person is dressing up as someone to be offensive but for Julianne to wear a 'costume' on halloween as a character of a show i guess i just don't understand what the racist/offensive/issue is?
what is the difference between that and a mask for a costume?

TIA!!!

Re: Julianne Hough as crazy eyes...

  • I suppose you aren't familiar with minstrel shows?  White performers would paint on "blackface" and get on stage to make a mockery of African Americans and exploit stereotypes for an audience.  These shows basically made black people out to be a joke.  So it's not the same as a mask when you consider its history.  It's incredibly offensive.
