Send blood work vibes UPDATED

edited November 2013 in GP Moms

So I am going to the hospital after work today to attempt to get the 5 tubes of blood drawn that the nurse tried to draw on Monday at my appointment. Every time I have a bad experience with getting my blood drawn I get worried that the next attempt won't be successful either so I am nervous.

Any vibes you can send my way are appreciated! I am going to chug water all day (like I have been doing ever since I found out I am pregnant. I am so sick of water already!) and hope for the best!

Update: SUCCESS! The lady drawing my blood got it on the first try. I got a little worried after the first 3 tubes because she said it slowed way down but she got enough for all 5 tubes. Awesome! Thanks for all your vibes...I'm sure they helped too!

  • I have always been a hard stick so I am very much used to having difficulty. @luckyangel07 I tried to give blood once and they said I should never try again. That's how terrible my veins are!

    Oy! No fun, there!

The techs usually get me to pump my veins up before they stick me. You know, sort of tourniquet the arm and make me squeeze my hand a lot to get the vein to pop out more. THEN they stick the needle in. It does the trick! Do they do that with you, or are they just trying to shove the needle in as is?

  • @luckyangel07, that works for giving blood. But you should not pump your fist for blood tests, it can skew the results for some tests.

    Huh! Who knew.

  • GL! Do they use a butterfly needle (I think that's what it's called)? My H also has a hard time giving blood and they usually use a smaller needle with the tubing and he has better luck that way.

Oh, ask for a butterfly! I am a really really hard stick. My last b/w (the same 5 viles), it took 5 techs and over an hour. Finally, they used a butterfly with a baby needle and got the blood.

  • Good luck! And good advice about the butterfly needle :)

Also, if you ever find a good spot or a trick let them know the people in the labs actually appreciate it when you can point them in the right direction.

  • good luck! just be hydrated and hopefully it all goes well
  • Good luck and chug that water!

I was going to mention the butterfly needle. My veins are tiny, sometimes hard to draw the blood out. I have always used the butterfly needle to get the blood drawn.

  • I mentioned the butterfly needle to the nurse who tried on Monday but she said with 5 vials that would be harder to use. The last time I had it drawn at the lab they had no problem so hopefully that will be the case today!

I had 10 tubes taken at one sitting and they used a butterfly needle. I guess it depends on the person?  :-/

Yeah I think she just didn't want to deal with it so she said it wouldn't work. Who knows?
