Transportation Spending Account Limits - This Shit Pisses Me Off!!!

The IRS has just announced the Transportation Spending limits for plan year 2014:

Transportation Fringe Benefits. For taxable years beginning in 2014, the monthly limit for the aggregate fringe benefit exclusion amount for transportation in a commuter highway vehicle and any transit pass will be $130, a decrease from the $240 limit for 2013, and the fringe benefit exclusion amount for qualified parking will be $250, an increase from the $245 limit for 2013. The 2014 limits reflect the expiration of the modifications to Section 132(f)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code by the American Taxpayer Relief Act.

So basically, the gov't will go ahead and let people who DRIVE individual vehicles and add to pollution and highway congestion get a bigger friggin' tax break than those of us being fiscally and environmentally responsible by taking public transportation to work!

They initially did the same shit last year with public transit amounts being maxed out at lower limits than parking, but then it got bumped back up a couple of months later.

HOW the eff does this crap make sense?!?! It pissed me off to no end!! I just had to vent about it. It's stupid, and backward, and unfair, and completely environmentally irresponsible to encourage people to continue to drive because they get a bigger break by driving and parking than taking mass transit. UGH!!

  • Unreal. Environmental responsibility is constantly undermined with crap like this. I'm rusty on current policy, but I know that this is not a new trend unfortunately (but unsurprisingly).
