Pregnant Woman on Raw Diet

http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/is-she-bananas--pregnant-woman-on-raw-fruit-diet-causes-controversy-194918045.html

I honestly don't see anything wrong with it as long as her doctor is telling her she and her baby are healthy.  I do think it's a little weird to eat 10 bananas in one sitting though...

What do y'all think?

Re: Pregnant Woman on Raw Diet

  • I know plenty of vegetarians / vegans who have had very healthy babies. This seems a little more extreme than that, but if he Dr. thinks it's ok and mom and baby are healthy then who's to criticize. People seem to have no problem when pregnant ladies eat McDonalds or other horrible processed foods, so why are they calling this woman selfish if her Dr. doesn't seem to have a concern that she's eating a ton of fruit, etc.

  • I think it's more of the mono meal things.  She eats 10 bananas for breakfast, 5 mangos for lunch, then a salad for dinner.  To get all the nutrients, I think you need to add a bit more variety to each meal.

Other than that, to each their own.  I'm starving if I don't get enough protein for breakfast.

  • Out of curiosity, I looked up the amount of protein in a banana. 1 banana has 1.3g of protein x 10 = 13g of protein. So that's about as much as a cup of Greek yogurt. Also, 1 mango has 2.8g of protein x 5 = 14g. Plus, we don't know what she puts in her salad. Granted, pregnant women are supposed to have like 70g of protein a day, but she is getting about 40% of her needed protein from the fruits.

Oh, the thinks I look up when I'm waiting for an experiment to finish LOL!

  • Interesting, but you're not going to get all your nutrients from bananas and mangos.

Like calcuim.  10 bananas and 5 mangos is around 20% of your calcuim.  (bananas was 10%, mangos was 8%).

  • I have a friend that's vegan and gluten free because of health issues. She gets tested to make sure she gets all her nutrients.  It's a struggle for her, but she does great, but she also eats more then 1 thing per meal to achieve that.  I'm not against the diet, jus the mono meal thing.

  • I'd like to think there is a happy medium between eating just raw fruit or whatever, and eating all McD's.  I mean, there are people who do both in this world right?  I'm highly suspicious of any diet with this degree of extremism.  (Not vegetarians or vegans, that's not extreme IMO.)  I'd also worry about this venturing into orthorexia territory.

I'm just going to leave this here...http://terileventhalsblog.blogspot.com/  & feel free to google the whole "30 Bananas a Day" community.  Even for the internet, it's pretty shocking.

  • That is a @$$load of sugar for one day.  I hope she plans on feeding her child a more balanced diet than her mono plan.  That kid will have diabetes by the time their 3 on that kind of diet.  I'm not against vegan diets but it should be balanced for all nutrients.

  • I feel bad for her, she clearly thinks she is really healthy but I can see her ribs, and her hair looks like any typical ED sufferers would.  She is not "cut" and lean like a fitness model, she looks like a sick girl.  I hope she finds a better balance...

The girl from the original link obviously didn't look this bad, but I came across the other blog a while back and it reminded me of that, thought I'd share.

Oh, I'm not condoning the whole mono eating thing....I think there's far more balanced ways of eating healthy and I don't condone any extreme diet. I guess my point was that most people don't flinch when a pregnant woman goes to the other extreme and eats a diet of McDonalds and ice cream. I feel like society thinks that it's ok to eat whatever you want when you're pregnant because of cravings and "eating for 2".

  • lol @nic12184 that reminds me of when Jessica Simpson gained all that weight while pregnant, and she was listing the foods she ate: buttered pop tarts, etc. and then was like where did those 80lbs come from??

  • Balance is the key word.  Do I judge a pregnant woman for eating fast food, nope unless she's making a daily run.  I judge the extremes.

  • I read about her yesterday.  She used to be a hard core party girl and now she wants to change her lifestyle and be healthy.  It was unclear whether she changed when she got pregnant or before.

With that said, she is too skinny.  Like some of you said, it's an eating disorder in disguise.  I am happy she is eating fruit, but 10 bananas?  I can barely eat one some days.  She is taking it to the extreme and she definitely needs to get nutrients from other sources as well.

@xxjen015, I would love to have you post in a bikini!  Maybe we should all start :)
  • @sjs1013, yes, let's! haha. First I'll have to buy a bikini....you guys might be scarred for life!

@frank139@msu.edu love it! haha. I'll cook my fat girl foods in my future bikini. Ooooooh-la-la!!

  • I honestly don't think I could eat more than 2-3 bananas in one sitting, even if I tried. I find this repulsive. I'd be worried about calcium too. That's okay though, of she doesn't take in enough, baby will just take it from her bones and teeth. It will be super attractive when her teeth are rotting out!
  • We could post pictures of ourselves with our weekly meal plan.  We could call it Swimsuit Sunday!  :))
  • I couldn't do this even if I wasn't pregnant. I agree with all those that said she looks terrible. I guess the baby is taking what it needs and leaving her with nothing.

Also I see that Sunday is going to be Swimsuit Sunday. Who's going to take that over. Lol
