Thanksgiving appetizers

My husband and I are hosting Thanksgiving for the first time this year and I'm just beginning to plan the menu. I've got a pretty good grip on the sit down part of the meal (entree, sides, desserts) but I'm struggling with what to have out when guests first arrive to nibble on. It will be a small group, 8-10 including us. Is it better to not put anything out but drinks so people don't ruin their appetite?

Re: Thanksgiving appetizers

  • Def. don't put out any heavy appetizers if you don't want people to be too full. Maybe a simple cheese and cracker plate, some seasoned nuts, something that will be tasty to snack on while they have a glass of wine or a beer. Maybe a veggie platter would do, but I still say put out food that will go well with their drinks!

  • When I host any type of dinner party at my place I always put something out. I have hosted Thanksgiving two of the three years we have been in the home. I do a simple veggie platter. I picked up the ready made one, one year and another time I cut up the veggies myself and made my own. Nothing fancy. My group doesn't like to nibble too much before dinner. Some will, some won't. I try and make it a point to have dinner ready by the time I tell people to be there. For example, this year for Thanksgiving I have people coming at 1PM. Everything will be ready at that time. Once everyone arrives we will sit and eat. We don't waste any time about it. I tell people who tend to be late the dinner starts at 12:30PM to allow them extra 30 mins. So I recommend evaluating your group. If they just like to drink do drinks, if they like to nibble a little do a little tray if you plan on having dinner ready on time then don't set anything out.
  • We usually do veggies and hummus for dip, cheese and fruit for appetizers when we have a meal coming. I would stick with healthy options instead of chips, sweets, etc.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I would avoid anything heavier than cheese and crackers because they'll have plenty to eat. You wouldn't want all your hard work to go to waste!
