GTKY: Parents

What do your parents do for a living? Has this always been their career?

Re: GTKY: Parents

  • My mom was a service representative for multiple companies. She now makes a killing and Im jealous of her HS degree making loads of money while I struggle to pay my bills with my masters haha

My dad worked in the airlines throwing bags. He is super smart and talented. I never understood why he wasted away in that place and he hated it so its not like he liked it. He actually just was told he is no longer able to work because of his heart. He is driving us all crazy, trying new hobbies of course he is good at everyone of them! haha!

  • My mom worked odd jobs when my brother and I were growing up and then she was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 11 and then she had a bunch of other surgeries so she was a stay at home mom for the next 7 years. Right after I graduated, she got a job at E-Check (an EPA company that passes our cars here in NE Ohio) and she been there for about 8 years. She hates it!

My dad worked at the same company, Central Brass (They manufactured faucets), for almost 30 years before they closed. He was the plant manager when they closed. After that, he was very depressed and didn't work for years. After that, he worked at a printing company with my brother and, after he moved to Texas, he started working at Lowe's. He handles the returns. I think he loves it there.

  • My mom has had several jobs. When I was younger she worked at Shriner's Hospital in different departments until I was in middle school. Then she worked for a collection agency until I was in high school. She was then let go and started working for my stepdad who has owned his own Appliance Repair business since the 80's.

My dad works for an oil company. He works in the bottling plant is plant manager. He actually also owns a seperate plant for another company with some other guys. My step mom has worked several jobs and I don't even know most of them. Now she just stays at home and is the one who's name is on the other company my dad owns.
  • My mom was a stay at home mom till 13 yrs ago when my brother my sister and I where old enough to take care of our selfs. She has been working in the loan offices of the bank she works at since then. My dad is now the 2nd in comand at a small paper company in Wisconsin. He hasn't always worked there, but it is his 2nd time working for this company. He left that one to work for another company that offered more money. he worked there for a while not sure how long i was young but he left them because the company ended up screwing my dad over and left my parent in sorse debt. So my dad left that company, and the owner of the company he works for now is his Gardian angel so my parents say because He hired my dad back after he quit the 1st time so now My dad has been with the paper company ever since then.

  • My dad is a pastor and my mom stayed home. Now my mom touters esl students.
  • My dad is retired- he was the Director of Finance for a town.  He has worked for numerous cities/towns in CT, but for a few years was the DoF for the CT Resources Recovery Authority.

He retired a couple of years ago, walked the Camino de Santiago (a pilgrimage walk- he started in France, and it ends on the coast of Spain. I'd love to do this some day.  More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Way_of_St._James) and has since been involving himself in the condo associations for the two condos they own (one here, one in FL). He's also done some consulting, to keep himself busy.  He makes me tired.

My mom SAH for many years, until my younger brother was in HS, I believe. Even then, she has only worked school hours (9-3, only during the school year) with Wednesdays off (she bowls). Before us, she had some pretty entry level data entry type jobs, but ever since she went back to work, she's been a cashier at a little family run grocery store.  I happened to be best friends with the daughter of the owner when I was little, so I'm pretty sure that's how she ended up with such sweet hours. She just dropped down to 3 days a week, but I'm pretty sure she'll work there forever.  She loves her customers, and they love her.

  • My dad was in sales. One of those guys that could sell ice to an Eskimo. Really personable and loved talking to people. He's sold sporting good, advertising, car parts, chips.. All sorts of things. It's what he's always done. Was actually considering a career change just before he died. Was thinking of going into minor residential construction

My mom is semi retired. She does taxes during tax season. She did that for a while while I was growing up. She did the books and receivables for a sporting goods shop for 11 years. Her and my dad owned a store for a couple years (I cout that in my dads sales experience) and before that she stayed home, and before that she'd always done books and accounting like stuff for companies. But she's not an accountant.

  • My dad is retired, but not really.  After he retired he got a job at the community college as a bowling and billiards instructor. He loves it.  He also runs a bowling tournament in the winter months (Jan-March)  in the city we live in.

My mom works for a k-8 school as paraprofessional.  She reads with students.  She used to be a library aid at the school.

  • My dad is an electrician and owns his own business. He has owned it since he was 22 and before that he worked for an electrician. My mom was a bank teller and did that while my sister was young, but when I was born she became a SAHM. Now she babysits my nephew a few days after school. When H and I have a baby, my mom has already said she would provide childcare for us.

  • My dad is in charge of security at a large international shipping company. He's been there for about 1000000000 years and loves every second of it. My mom is a retired toddler teacher. Now she spends her time spoiling her grandchildren and filling our condo with toys.

  • My dad is an insurance agent. Has been for about 25 years, but before that he worked for Honeywell, the security system company. He has an associates degree in computer science, which is why he was at Honeywell, but he was laid off in the 80s, bought a Nationwide franchise and has been selling insurance since.

My mom has a Masters in organizational development and was doing that for 20 some years. She quit her job at a residential treatment center to start her own business, which didn't pan out. She's been doing contract work for the past 10 years and has really struggled to get anything to stick, but she just finished writing a book about living an abundant Christian life, which will be selling on Amazon and bookstores as a paperback and ebook in the next few weeks. I'm so excited for her! Her book signing is Dec 5

  • My Dad is a welder. He has been since he dropped out of high school and joined the army (he's since earned his GED). He's done everything from building submarines to owning his own business. Now he works for a small company that does a lot of neat "odd" jobs (i.e. building the marque at a local theatre & constructing dorms at local colleges).

My Mom works in the cash office of a regional grocery store chain. She's worked for this company in some capacity for over 20 years. When we were little she worked there at night and ran a small day care out of our home so she could be home with us. I don't know how she did it!
