CPW - Breathable Bumpers

edited November 2013 in GP Moms
I would not be using them for decorative purposes. The cribs look adorable without them.

Re: CPW - Breathable Bumpers

  • I'm not completely opposed to them, but at just under 18 months old I've never had a problem with Lucy getting stuck in the crib rails.

  • DS moves a TON. He is a wiggler.

I didn't like the breathable bumpers because I thought they were/are ugly, but I realized we needed one, so I bought one.

  • I voted other because I didn't use one but not for safety reasons. Getting limbs stuck hasn't been an issue for DS and he's 21 months.

  • I just read about these for the first time today. Has anyone used regular bumpers and had an issue? I've read some stuff, but honestly everyone I grew up with had them and nothing bad ever happened.

  • I just got a breathable bumper for the crib because when I checked on him he had woken himself up and was crying because his foot was stuck in the slats.

I also stuck my face up against them and breathed - they are pretty breathable.

I wouldn't use breathable or regular bumpers with a newborn because 1. they don't usually roll or get stuck and 2. if they do get their face stuck up against them, they may or may not have the strength to pull their face off of them.

Regular bumpers aren't worth the risk,  IMO

  • We use them.  P is a mover, so I like having them.  He tends to side right up to them and then turn his head into it.  I like that it's breathable because of that.

Regular bumpers are illegal in my state (Maryland). I know they were the first state to do this, I don't know if others have followed since.

  • We started using them around 5 months when M was waking herself up because her arms and legs were getting stuck in the crib rails. They're still in her crib. She moves a ton in her sleep. They're also great at keeping pacifiers in the crib!

  • Hmmm...good thoughts.  I registered for them and have them, but it sounds like I wouldn't need them in the beginning and can always re-buy if necessary.  I would never use regular bumpers so this sounds like the other option!

  • Added bonus: once baby is older and can find his/her own binkies they keep them from falling out of the crib! We took the bumpers out at one point and put them back the very next day due to a multiple wake up night fom lost binkies.

  • We put them on right away but she didn't move to her crib until she was about 5.5 months old. I took them off one night after finding her wedged against the side but then she got a leg stuck so they went back on. No issues since!

  • I bought them a few months ago after LO got stuck twice. They were a bitch to put on. LO just wanted to play with them. I returned the bumpers a few days later. A sleep sack will help them from getting stuck. In our case we just risk it. He hasn't gotten stuck since.

  • I wouldn't use regular bumpers. I am planning to register for a breathable one. I don't think I'll need it early on, but I'd like to have the option if baby gets stuck.

Also, I can imagine not having to get up to find pacifiers would be lovely too.

  • We used them more for Cora's paci falling out of the crib. She was able to crawl around and get it since it wouldn't fall out. We used them from 6-12 months old.

  • We started using them around 7 or 8 months when Lil started really rolling all over the place. She would get a leg stuck and she loves sleeping with her head pressed up against the rails, so I put them in so she'd have a little cushion. Now I just have one along the back end of the crib so her binkies don't fall out.

  • We actually used them because she was so used to the bassinet that she was scared and would cry when she was in the open crib. I just put one on the front rail and she slept so good after that and never cried. Even at 10 months she barely moves at night, she is such a sound sleeper.

  • B is a huge mover in his sleep. After getting his leg caught and nearly breaking while rolling in his sleep we got one. We told the pediatrician and she said while they aren't recommended she supports the use in cases where the child rolls/moves and cannot get their legs out of the rails. We used it until we moved him to a big kid bed around 15 months (whole different story...we have an escape artist on our hands).
