Help me plan our vacation?

So, it's no secret around here that I love my birthday. We are planning a mini vacation/ honeymoon for the end of March.
Here's kind of an idea of what I have thought out so far.
March 21-24 we will be at my aunts house near Atlanta. We will be staying with her and visiting with my half siblings, some of which I have never met.
24-26 or 27 We will be heading to Gulf Shores, AL. I'm not sure where to stay (cheapish) or what to do while we are there. I have a friend that lives down there that has given us a few recommendations, but she's more into the party scene than we are.
If time and money allow we would like to head to NOLA for a day or two and one night before heading home. I know you ladies suggest coffee/ beignets (not spelled correctly I know) at a place there. And I'm thinking there was another eatery that everyone always suggests too. We are more interested in the historical aspect of NOLA. I would like to get to see the French Quarter for sure.

Any ideas on where to stay or what to see in Gulf Shores or NOLA would be much appreciated. I know most of our time in ATL will be taken up by family.
As always, thanks for all your suggestions and help! Links would also be appreciated. :-)

Re: Help me plan our vacation?

  • I really like renting little cottages when I travel these days. I usually use airbnb just make sure you check the "entire house" box so you don't get room share things. My boss just went to NOLA and rented a cute place on airbnb. Have fun!!

  • Ever heard of Lamberts restaurant? I have heard of it but never been. It's in Foley which is 20 min. from Gulf Shores. They throw rolls to you while you eat dinner. To me that would be funny and entertaining. We usually go to Orange Beach once a year to hang on the beach, eat seafood and go shopping at the big outlet malls.Oh here's the link for Lamberts. http://www.throwedrolls.com/

  • We have a lamberts about 2 hours from us.
  • My mom and sister live in Mobile, so I've got the inside scoop on Gulf Shores!!

Lambert's, as PP suggested, is awesome. I will get recs from mom and sister on places to stay and where to go. I can't recall specific names off the top of my head right now. You won't be far from the AL/FL border, so check out the Florabama bar for sure!

You won't be too far from the battleship USS Alabama (about an hour's drive). Battleship Park has both the ship to tour and an aviation museum, so if you guys are at all interested in that, it's a cool day trip.

My sister recommends the (Original) Oyster House. It's got lots of different seafood.

I'll get more for you when they get back to me!

  • My BFF loves florabama bar, so that's definitely on our list of places to go. Thank you @luckyangel07!
  • Mom got back to me! She suggests just looking online for places to stay. I think they've rented a condo in Orange Beach in previous years, but because they live so close, they don't typically need to know where to stay. March should be off season, but if spring break is going on, prices might be a little higher than typical off season rates.

There is a small zoo in Gulf Shores that you guys can check out. Mom also reiterates going to Flora Bama! She also says The Hangout is located in Gulf Shores and has live music from time to time. There really are so many restaurant options you guys could just drive around until you see some place that catches your attention.

  • We went to NOLA in September and LOVED IT!  We stayed at Lafitte Guest House on Bourbon St and the thing I liked most was that it was just right outside the crazy part of Bourbon.  We could still walk to everything easily and sleep good with little noise level.  The beignets at Cafe Du Monde are probably what you are referring to and highly recommend going there.  Get a frozen coffee!  It's amazing!  We also really like Mothers Restaurant.  They have the Ferdi Special and you have to try it.  It's awesome!

I wrote about our trip in more detail in my blog which is linked in my siggy.

Oh yeah! I totally forgot about the NOLA portion! Cafe du Monde
for sure!! They're in the French Quarter right off the river. That way, you can get your beignets and coffee (expect the place to be packed!!) and then wander the French Quarter. :)
