Crib mattress?

Is there anything specific you need to keep in mind when buying a crib mattress?

  • My crib had rules for crib mattress size plastered in probably 5 places on the crib and instructions. And surprisingly some of the mattresses we looked at didn't meet those requirements. So definitely pay attention to the dimensions your crib requires because mattresses are not universally sized like I would have thought.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • Definitely snug to the crib. Otherwise the quality varies. We bought a good quality one because we knew we would convert to a toddler bed later on, and the mattress would be used for years.

  • Not sure...can you google your crib specs? Look on the manufacturer site?

  • Definitely be sure the size fits. My mom (who bought us the crib and mattress as our baby shower gift) insisted that the mattress be made in the US because of all of the things from China that in the last couple of years have been found not to meet safety standards.

I got two of these: http://www.hayneedle.com/sale/southshoresavannah2in1convertiblecribcollectionwhite.cf

The following things were must haves:
    - non-toxic paint
    - Convertible
    - not too big and bulky (because we need two)
    - Adjustable mattress heights
    - I didn't want a solid back wall so the baby could easily breath
    - I like the thicker slats

This is the mattress I want to get: http://www.amazon.com/Safety-1st-Heavenly-Dreams-Mattress/dp/B004044LD4/ref=br_it_dp_o_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=68B9VR9YQVVR&coliid=I1ZU5F1EBA7J9M

    The requirements:
    - water proof
    - not made in China (this one is made in Canada)
    - Hypoallergenic
    - Very firm (I'm going off reviews here)
** plus its a best seller on Amazon, which I trust

    What about you LB?

  • I was at walmart and the employee helping us opened the cheapest one... the smell!! Omg, I couldn't have the babies laying on that chemical smell. And I'm cheap.

I think it's the only thing I went 'organic' on. The mattress was more expensive than our crib. I can dig around if you want the name..

    This is the crib: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0051SDPS0/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=baby

I know you can get it in the US as well. When we started a registry we had limited options so this one we liked the feel of best in store (they had one set up). My mom just said someone bought it for us online and to take it off my registry, so yay for that!

Still no clue about a mattress though!

ETA: With this change table. http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0051SDROC/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=baby

I wanted something that came in white (not always easy to find) and I wanted a change table with open storage AND drawers since we aren't doing a dresser, just closet organization etc.

Venti29 yes please... "off gassing" is very real and you don't want babies on new mattresses without giving them time to expel the trapped gas.  My mom wants me to get the mattress month before the babies come to give the mattresses time to off gas outside or in the garage without sheets on them -my mom is even more of a hippie than me ;)

  • Oh, LB- I love your crib.  It's so cute.  I wish we could have cribs with some decorative aspects like yours but we really just needed to keep them as small as possible.  I love the lines on your crib.

  • We got the Sealy Soybean Crib Mattress

I bought it because it is recommended in "Baby Bargains" (april 2013 ed) which I used for all of my baby purchases (I don't know what I would do without it).

I did let the mattress air out for quite a while (a couple months?) there was a kind of plastic smell (which I assumed was normal?) for a couple weeks. I don't know if it was the mattress of the crib that had the smell as we set them both up at the same time.

I just checked and the mattress says it was made in the USA.

It is light (so I can change the sheets without help), seems firm and comfortable, and fits the crib really well - nice and tight!

  • I got one of the Sealy's at BRU. It fits nice and snug as suggested on the crib directions. It is firm but comfy. It was also very reasonably priced. They actually had them unwrapped so I didn't have to air it out. I hate that plastic or chemical smell so I'm glad of this.

Speak sweetly so that if you ever have to eat your words, they don't taste bad.

    ~Unknown~

    Lesson learned!!

  • Firm, fits exactly to the crib

This. We also got the Sealy pp mentioned. I plan to buy another one once 2.0 moves into the crib.
