Candy Crush

Because I know someone on here is as crazy as I am and started playing this game, and will understand.

I am stuck on a level and its driving me nuts!  About to quit!   (No I won't)   What amazes me is that people actually pay money to get to the next level.  WWHHAATTT!!??   Its a FB game, I refuse to spend a penny!

Ok, vent over =)   Add yours if you like.

Re: Candy Crush

  • Ha I've never played candy crush.

My vent for the day has to do with credit cards.  H and I are tentatively planning a trip to England for next summer.  Last time I was in Europe was 2008 so I'm brushing up on all the international money stuff again.

Well it seems like Europe has basically gone to the chip and PIN cards everywhere since the last time I was there... so I called all around today trying to find out if one of our credit card companies would issue us a chip and PIN version of our cards.  Nope, not a one.  A few had chip only and insisted that PINs weren't necessary.... uhh yeah.  The automated machines at the train stations and gas stations require PINs.  American chip only pins are basically pointless.  Plus they're really insecure because their signals with all the credit card info can be skimmed through your clothing and wallet without a PIN.  Like, you can just walk near somebody with a skimmer and your credit card info can be compromised if it's chip only.  Again, the credit card people were like "No they can't! They're super secure!"  False.  It takes about $300 worth of equipment to skim them.  Anyway, I just wasn't comfortable getting one without a PIN.

I finally found an American bank (a credit union actually) that will issue them with a true PIN, but sheesh.  It was a pain.  And we're going to have to apply for yet another card.  The magnetic swipe ones still work at most large businesses over there with manned check out stations, but I have this vision of us on our road trip being stranded in a tiny town because we can't buy gas at the pump.  Apparently a lot of them are unmanned for large portions of the week.  Sigh.

  • We went to Europe last year and had no problem using our regular credit cards.  I also went in 2004, and had no problems with any of the credit cards.

Now I want to book a trip to Europe...hhmmm

  • Yeah if we were just staying in London the whole time I wouldn't worry about it - but H has this plan to go on a road trip for about half of it...   He has this list of teeny tiny towns to "see the real England."  It should be awesome, but I'm a bit paranoid about being caught unprepared.

  • Sounds awesome!  How long are you guys going for?
  • Hoping for 10-ish days... I'm planning on catching a holiday Monday and taking the week off before that.  Probably our last big trip until babies.  Once H starts working it's all downhill, time-wise!

Thinking we're going to split it 50-50 between London and the countryside.  H has pulled out this map and is finding places he wants to visit... my favorite, so far, has been Stonehenge.  At 6:15 in the morning to catch the sunrise over the stones.  Oi.

    It shall be an adventure!

  • Ugg I am stuck on level 181. I hate when they happens because I stop playing for awhile.
  • @hoffse  I would recommend having cash for a lot of the smaller towns outside London. Like PP I also used my regular credit card and didn't have a problem.
Also, if you're planning Stonehenge, there's the town called Bath not too far away that has some really neat cultural things along with the Roman Baths.

  • My parents have travled through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and haven't ever had problems using their regular Debit cards. Of course there are those wonder ATM fees and international transaction fees you get charged so take out max you can each time.

A co-worker of mine went to Scotland this past fall and didn't have any troubles with her debit card either. Not sure if this is something specific to England.

  • Eh I don't like to use debit cards except for cash.  They don't have as much consumer protection as credit cards.

We will be able to pay cash at lots of places, but supposedly there are a bunch of unmanned gas stations in the smaller towns that only take cards.
